Bought this before buying a used car privately, wanted to check panel consistency myself rather then relying solely on a pre-purchase inspection that might not catch cosmetic repair history. Figured a decent gauge was worth owning anyway for future car buying or just checking my own vehicle after any bodywork. Readings were quick and consistent, held the probe flush against each panel and got a stable number within a second or two, no jumping around or needing multiple attempts to get a reliable reading. Went panel by panel on the used car and found one door reading noticeably thicker then the rest, clear sign of filler or a repaint that wasn't mentioned in the listing. Calibrated it against a known factory panel on my own car first to get a baseline for comparison, readings matched what I'd expect for original factory paint, gave me confidence the numbers on the used car weren't just measurement error. Display is easy to read even in daylight, and it holds the last reading long enough to jot down notes between panels. For the price, this ended up saving me from either overpaying for a car with undisclosed bodywork or getting into a negotiation blind without proof, real value packed into something this affordable compared to paying for a professional inspection every time. Only complaint is the manual that comes with it is pretty bare bones on explaining what reading ranges typically indicate factory paint versus repair work, had to look that up separately. Great tool for anyone buying used vehicles regularly or just wanting to verify their own car's paint history. Seemed easy to use but not super durable.

Device is well made and just works, out of the box (need your own 2xAAA batteries). It comes with calibration slides which are layers of clear acrylic, each numbered from 2mm, 1mm, 0.5mm, .25mm. 0.1mm and .05mm. You can layer them up to make many different thicknesses to test against the included piece of thin steel. There is a way to calibrate it if it were off, but wasn't off by enough for me to care, so I didn't bother. It registered a .027, when I was testing with actual .025, for example. I could have calibrated this out, but didn't bother. Not perfect, but way more than perfect enough to test car paint thickness when looking for previous undocumented body work. Why spend more?

Instructions are horrible and it is way off!!

I measured each panel of my car at least 5 times per panel and got 5 completely different readings. There is no way to get an accurate measurement. In addition, the instructions are typical Chinese product instructions. Useless!. I had to go on YouTube to learn how to calibrate it. I did it perfectly, 3 times, but still got different readings per panel.

didn't want to spend too much on a new paint thickness gauge as I lost a more expensive one this works great and accurately as far as I can tell this is a great tool to have to determine if a car has been repainted or use it to check how much clearcoat is on a vehicle before doing paint correction

Its a decently accurate product according to the price. If you need something more accurate you need to spend at least 10 times more. Does the job for a weekend warrior doing occasionnel paint correction.
