Can I grow marijuana in it?

No. Marijuana behaves almost exactly like tomatoes in how it reacts to growing environments. Like tomatoes, Marijuana would grow really well while in the green vegetative growth state. Fish provide everything needed for healthy green leaves, so big plants with healthy leaves would grow. However, once you switched to flowering stage, the nutritional needs change in a huge way. Tomatoes as well as dank buds would struggle to grow. Adding the nutrients that your plants need would hurt (and probably kill) the fish.

My beta fish lasted a whole 2 hours in the tank. It got sucked to the bottom of the pump. What can I do to prevent future fish deaths?

I can’t believe the level of misinformation here. 1. 3 gallons is not “generous” for bettas. They do not live in “puddles”, they live in marshy shallow areas of Thailand where they have ample space to move. The recommended minimum for a betta is in fact that of 5 gallons. 2. Speaking of a betta’s natural habitat, they come from tropical temperatures and usually require an in tank heater. 75-80*F is their ideal range. They also should have a resting area near the top of the water, such as a “betta hammock leaf. Ad well as tannin infused water, resembling their natural habitat. Indian Almond Leaves in the tank produce the tannins and give the water a dark hue, and also make the water healthier for the fish. 3. Never use the water that comes with the cup from the pet store, as the parameters are always horrible. If owning a betta, getting the API master testing kit is crucial to check and monitor the pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. 4. Also look into and learn about “tank cycling”. It is best to cycle a tank prior to putting the fish in, but an “in fish cycle” can be done with frequent water changes, Seachem Prime and Tetra Safestart Plus. (The API master testing kit lets you know when it’s cycled). 5. The Seachem Prime is a water conditioner, which removes chlorine and ammonia from water. Without proper care, they are VERY susceptible to early death, illness and fin rot. Even over feeding them will likely lead to bloat and dropsy which is fatal. I’d heavily advise people to educate themselves on bettas and owning bettas; and to keep in mind that majority of people working at big box pet stores do not know how to properly care for them. I’d use a 3 gallon as a hospital/quarantine tank for a Betta, but not for its actual home tank. If you want this product, I’d recommend a guppy.

Can you use this without plugging it in? I want it in my classroom but don't have a good spot near an outlet. I would add a beta fish.

This product can be use without plugging it in. However, the top part where you grow plants will be useless as it needs the pump for the water supply. Also, you may need to clean this once in a while as you will no longer have a filtration system. But if you plan on just having a fish, this is great, and you may add a mini faux plant for decoration. Thank you! Regards, Ross
