I can't see the carbon.
Works in my mercury mariner 2011, good filter, however I can't see any activated carbon in it, maybe they refers to some layer of carbon, filter comes with a border of foam to fit the borders.

OK but not best fit for 08 escape
I was surprised that I did not have an original filter in my car as I have never changed it and a dealer SHOULD have been changing it prior. Therefore I was not able to compare this one to an old one. It is an awkward install with high doubt it is were it should be as pushing it down past the intake screens puts it in a awkward position. I have doubts I have a full seal to the cabin. The only benefit I found to do this job was removing a plug of old leaves on that side. All these years and I was not aware of this filter location or that the area around it could get clogged.

Why didn't Ford install this at the factory?
Every Ford Escape / Mercury Mariner (2008-2012) I have owned (6) has NOT had a cabin air filter installed in the designed spot under the cowl vent. I assume it was a cost-saving measure but short-sighted by the manufacturer. This filter is a perfect fix, easy to install and keeps the dirt/bugs/birds, etc from getting into the HVAC system. My vent area was very dusty so you know the HVAC system under the dash was as well. I am hoping that this stops anymore contamination and actually lets some build up crud to gradually come off as the condensation drips out during AC operation. This economical filter can help your expensive car HVAC system survive a bit longer. Think about taking out your furnace filters at home....same results in the car!!!
