Comparison between XB10 and overall impressions
Got this because I needed a new small portable Bluetooth speaker I can easily fit in my bags for trips to the park or staying over in hotels etc. This definitely ticks the portability box nicely. Aside from this I also have a Sony SRS-XB10 and a HomePod Mini around the house. The HomePod Mini is similarly small but not designed for portability (no battery) and of course only works with Apple products. But I’ll use both as comparisons for sound quality as they’re both small wireless speakers, keeping in mind the other Sony cost around the same as this one being a previous version of the same model, while the HomePod Mini costs £100. Photographed in this review are both the black XB13 and the white XB10 for a visual comparison. The main change you’re likely to notice is the strap which is now a more rugged material on the XB13 whereas the XB10 has a thin cord connected to a piece of plastic. The casing of the speaker itself feels more “solid” as well, more substantial. It’s not so thick that it’s heavy - not at all - but it still feels better suited to brave the elements. So if you plan to travel outdoors with one of these, the XB13 is certainly an improvement over the XB10. The XB13 cost me just a little over than £40 here on Amazon brand new. The sound, and in particular the bass response, is noticeably better than the XB10 although definitely sounds more “muddled” than the HomePod Mini and can be described as “tinny” at higher volumes. This is to be expected however as not only are both much cheaper, but the XB13 is limited to SBC or AAC codec only. No others are supported. It would have been nice for Sony to add support for their own LDAC codec which would allow much better support for lossless music and I doubt the hardware would need much if any change to add this support as it’s a simple receiver. I’m guessing they reasoned it wasn’t worth adding for a low budget speaker. Still it’d have been nice to have with all the streaming services releasing lossless options and all modern Android phones having LDAC support built in. Connectivity - the XB13 has no AUX support, so it’s Bluetooth via AAC only. Ditto for the HomePod although it uses WiFi rather than Bluetooth and will soon have lossless support. The XB10 does have AUX input as well as Bluetooth. However the XB13 and HomePod Mini both use modern USB-C for power while the old XB10 uses micro USB. With USB-C rapidly becoming the latest universal standard used by everything from Android phones, iPads, laptops, and indeed Sony’s own latest Bluetooth headphones, this is a welcome addition. It means if you’re travelling with an Android phone, iPad, laptop, or other device that uses USB-C you can use the same charger for this speaker too. Fewer cables to lug around is always welcome and most other low budget Bluetooth speakers and accessories of all types are still using outdated micro USB so Sony did good here. Battery life seems good for the XB13. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem to show a battery life indicator on the unit itself or on my phone like my Sony headphones do. Neither does the XB10. Seems like a strange omission given how easy it is to transmit battery level via Bluetooth to the paired device. But at a guess I’d suggest it does roughly live up to claimed 16 hours of battery life depending on how loud you push it. For an experiment I tried playing Dolby Atmos music from my iPhone. As you’d probably expect it didn’t sound like spatial audio. It still played fine but didn’t produce the effect it does on Atmos supported devices like the HomePod Mini. I can’t really give the XB13 a ding for this as it doesn’t claim to have such support to begin with. I also connected it to an Android phone and a Sony Walkman A45. Pairing was easy, fast, and flawless with no lag or disconnection. I would have liked to use the LDAC support on my A45 when connected to this speaker but that’s the only small complaint I have. Overall impressions: this is a great little speaker that does the job well. I’d like to see support for LDAC added to a future model as it’s Sony’s own codec and it’s very good at playing lossless audio via Bluetooth. Other than that I don’t have much to really complain about. Initial pairing is fast and easy. Bluetooth connection is reliable. Sound quality is much better than you’d likely expect from a small low budget bluetooth speaker such as this. If portability is a top priority this is your go to. If you plan to keep it in one place, perhaps look at the HomePod Mini if you use Apple gear. If you don’t mind lugging around a big speaker, larger higher end models can offer louder, high quality sound with better codec support. But if you want exactly what this is - a cheap small speaker you can throw in your bag and play music anywhere - it’s the best in its class.

Compact, great sounding speaker
When I was looking to purchase this, I watch no end of YouTube video reviews etc, but found it hard to decide whether I should go for it or not. The reviews tended to be unfairly critical of this devicez stating the fact there is ano stereo separation as a negative, well duh. If you're going to purchase a mono Bluetooth speak, the fact it doesn't output stereo isn't going to be a surprise or important to you. Many stated the device doesn't go loud enough. If you wanted something loud that doesn't lose clarity surely you would be looking specifically for a more up-market speaker. My views: Sound quality is always relative to what you're used to, the same goes for volume. I've owned so many Bluetooth speakers, hi-fi's, smart speakers and home cinema systems over the years that I'm pretty sure I can review this speaker fairly. This speaker is fantastic, no buyers remorse what-so-ever. The sound quality is excellent for such a compact speaker. Brilliant bass, clear kids and highs, although you want the face of the speaker facing you to get the most out of it. The max volume is quieter than most other speakers on the market, but it goes plenty loud enough for the majority of applications, anyhow, I'd take a fuller, richer sound than volume anyway and tend to find with many other speakers they start throttling the bass or lose clarity at the higher volumes. This speaker is clear and balanced all the way up to full volume. I haven't had it long enough to test the battery claims out, but with it being a Sony product I have no concerns with that. Summary If you want a decent sounding, small, portable bluetooth speaker that is USB C rechargeable, the Sony SRS XB13 won't disappoint.

Years after buying it, still going strong, still love it
I've had this speaker for nearly 4 years, and it's still excellent, very reliable, still working exactly as it should and giving excellent sound quality. I use it when I'm doing DIY around the house, or to take to a gathering like a picnic or party where I know there won't be good sound but we will want to listen to something. Most recently, a family member was visiting my house and needed to make a Zoom call but his speakers weren't working, so we paired this with his laptop and it worked perfectly for the sound output. He's now thinking of buying one for himself because I told him he couldn't "borrow" mine for an extended period. I've never run out of charge on it, maybe partly because I keep it charged. But it's impressive the battery has lasted so well for so long. I'm delighted with this purchase.

Seriously impressed for the price and size.
I ordered this speaker as a cheap fix for the intermittent malfunction of the speakers in my car. The speaker arrived less than 16 hours after placing my order. It had some charge in it upon opening the box, so I was able to test it out immediately. It easily paired with my iphone, and played from my music streaming service upon launching the app. I was really impressed with the sound quality (caveat...I am easily pleased!!) - it definitely exceeded my expectations. The volume controls are excellent - allowing a very low volume to be achieved (great if you want to use it to help sleep); but also loud enough to be able to hear the music and satnav over the noise of the car engine. I haven't tried to use it for phone calls yet, so I cannot comment on how good the microphone is; and I also don't intend to use it in the shower. I ordered the blue speaker, which is a good mid-blue colour (lighter than navy blue, but still pretty dark). The strap is more of a denim blue colour. The speaker is a bit shorter than a standard fizzy drinks can, but roughly the same width - it just about fits in the drinks holder in my car, although with the strap, I can hang it from the handle on the drivers door, with the speaker sitting in/on the pocket in the door. Clearly, if you want amazing sound, or to be able to play music really loud, then this is not for you; but for approx £40, reasonable quality and very portable, I don't see much to complain about so far.

Fantastic little speaker with good sound and bass.
For a small portable speaker this is very good quality. Connects easily in seconds and never drops out. The loop allows you to attach it to clothing/rucksack or hang from somewhere too. Size wise it is about as big as an average tea/coffee mug, and the sound is pretty good too for a small portable speaker. For those reviewers who say the bass isn’t very good I’ve got to disagree and think you need your hearing checking. The bass on mine is very good for its size. It makes the table vibrate due to the bass at about 1/3 volume and upwards. In fact the sound is comparable to my Google Nest mini home speaker. More than enough to fill a meeting room at work with sound. This is when I use it for speakerphone calls and listening to music at work. The only thing I didn’t like was the lemon yellow speaker. It’s not like the colour in the advertising and is more washed out looking. The Sony logo also looked like it was dirty rather than silver. Added to this was the fact it showed dirt underneath very quickly on the non slip bottom. I returned it and ordered the blue instead which is much nicer. Overall I recommend the product. I am not a member of any review program by the way. This was purchased with my own hard earned cash. Pros: * Works with voice assistants (Siri). * USB-C charging standard and comes with short USB-A to C lead (no plug though just use a phone charger). * IP rated and waterproof. * Works with Apple and Android devices. * Quick connect for Google. * iPhone users can see the speaker battery life in their device battery list. * Compact unit with good sound and bass. * Good battery life. * Good clear hands free calls. Cons: * Lemon yellow colour is not like it is in the pictures. Rather washed out and dirty looking. * At full price it’s a bit expensive. I got mine for £37 which is not a bad price for what you get and the Sony brand. * No audio input for when the battery goes flat. * For the price it would be nice if it came in a little drawstring padded bag to protect it with. A bit like the Sony bag that I got with my pair of over ear bluetooth headphones. * Would be good if it auto connected to Apple like it does with the Google connect feature. Just like when you first pair AirPods to your iPhone.

Mighty Performer at a Budget-Friendly Price!
TLDR:= Amazing sounds and functions in this low price Function : ★★★★★ Price : ★★★★★ Sounds : ★★★★☆ Style : ★★★★☆ Detail review: Pros: The SRS-XB13 offers an incredible range of functionalities, especially considering its affordable price point. I'm impressed by its remarkable sound quality, which boasts a respectable bass. The speaker's loudness is more than sufficient for hosting small parties, whether outdoors or indoors. The strap is surprisingly useful which I didn't expect at the beginning. It is really a convenience that I can hand my speaker on my backpack, so I can listen to music while I'm hiking. I was surprised by the high-quality materials used, with a smooth matte finish that exudes sophistication. Moreover, the availability of a variety of colours to choose from adds a touch of personalization to suit individual preferences. Here is the big part, the Bluetooth connection is amazingly easy and fast. AND!!! you can buy two of them and connect them together, they will become a pair of speakers to give you double enjoyment. It even comes with a mic so that u can use it to answer phone calls or even integrate it into your smart home. Cons: The battery is not long as 16hrs if using it with medium or high volume. Also, it doesn't come with an outdoor Boost Button, so using it outdoors the sounds fade away a little bit. The USB cable is a little bit short but it is not a problem to me. Although the design looks really nice, the hollow part is really hard to clean, Lucky you can drop it in water to clean

Convenient!!
Awesome little addition to the toolbelt. As a contractor, it's boring at times working away in silence. I clip it to my toolbelt and carry on. It comes with you wherever you go and it doesn't disturb the entire site but packs a kick when you need it to!

Small but Punchy
Perfect for a bit of music wherever you go. Small. Portable. Battery is long lasting and the sound defies its compact size. Sounds more bassy than you expect from a small package. It’s never going to light up a party, but then you knew that before buying this. Great for a bit of ambience. Surprisingly loud for its size with good balance.
