Advanced Grammar in Use Book with Answers and eBook and Online Test

The 'Advanced Grammar in Use Book with Answers' by Martin Hewings is a game-changer. Thus far, I have been learning many grammar concepts in greater detail, that I otherwise had not learned, in comparison to the book's erudite explanations, at uni! Now, as a postgraduate researcher, I find this book incredibly insightful and indisputably indispensable. Highly recommend for any success in English writing.

This is quite a comprehensive package consisting of neatly printed, large-format paperback book with glossy pages, ebook and online resources and tests. This really is an "advanced" book, I feel more suited to people who have worked their way through earlier books (never basic, graamar can never be considered simple). However, the pages are laid out neatly and with clearly defined goals. The text is easy to read and the questions are mostly straightforward, although with multiple choice there is often an answer different to the one you would give because it often seems more than one answer is accurate. For most of my time in school and then university, my teachers/lecturers held to the belief that literature was language in action. By reading we learn language, by reading we learn grammar - and through writing essays they were able to asses progress. It is a system that worked well for me (given my grades) but after looking through some of this book I have to say I wish something similar had been available to me when studying. I will enjoy working through the book - and likely correcting many errors in grammar that I have become used to using. My only point of contention, though, is that this book is intended to teach perfect English grammar whereas grammar, like language, does change as time moves on. Contemporary novels and poetry, for instance, might not be full of correct and accurate English grammar yet the text is correct in context. For study purposes this book is really good, especially for people who have some grounding in English grammar. For those, like me, who continue to have an interest in "words", it is also a desirable object. This is a very expensive package for what you get, far more than I would expect to pay (£29.23 at the time of this review). I can't say it is worth the money but, from my perusal of the text, money isn't really the point, the point is the quality of the teaching materials here and for that I keep this with a 5 star rating.

I found this English grammar study book to be incredibly helpful. Once you get used to its compact style of delivering information, it's very easy to follow. The layout remains consistent throughout the book: the teaching part is on the left-hand page, and the practice exercises are on the right-hand page. This makes it convenient to refer to the grammar explanations if you get confused while answering questions. I particularly like that some of the practice exercises require you to think and come up with your own answers, rather than just guessing from multiple-choice options. And of course, all the answers are available at the end of the book. Based on my personal experience, it's not always easy to strike a balance between presenting content and keeping it concise. However, this self-study book manages to simplify the subjects without losing substance. In addition to the printed material, the book provides access to online resources using a unique code that comes with the purchase. These resources include audio files, which are great for improving pronunciation and more. As for the physical aspects, the book is made of good-quality paper with vibrant colours and clear text. In summary, this book provides substantial content without overwhelming the reader. The design, style, and colour scheme create a relaxing and satisfying reading/studying experience. The font size and layout are comfortable, with information presented in manageable chunks that are easy to read and take in.

As ever, the Grammar in Use range is the gold standard and a real godsend if you're preparing EFL students for advanced / higher-level Cambridge exams. This CEFR C1/C2 handbook is the top rung, although does a fantastic job of breaking down some tricky grammar points - no doubt for native speakers as well as advanced learners - in a way that is systematic and bitesized. The layout is clean and easy on the eye as always, making it a great at-a-glance reference as well as workbook. It's the added-value online extras that really make this edition something special. There's a very generous 3-year licence for the eBook included, which is beyond helpful if you're teaching on the go. And the linked online tests are really comprehensive, all linked very precisely with the book topics. Included answer keys are especially helpful for those working independently without a tutor. It's a fantastic resource for EFL teachers, and the new edition adds a huge amount of value - can't recommend it enough.

This is a well written resource that comes with the physical book, a 36 month licence for the e-book and access to over 200 tests online. This makes it quite comprehensive to help someone who is trying to self-study. The book provides a very easy to understand way of teaching a concept and then lots of exercises to try out. This is really helpful especially the online resources to be able to get feedback on your attempts. The audio resources are also very useful and helpful. The actual book quality, the colour and the paper is very high quality. It has 105 units of grammar reference including grammar for academic purposes. So this can certainly be very useful for anyone preparing for academic English exams e.g. IELTS but I would say this is useful for anyone who is looking to improve their grammar. The book certainly helps in enabling someone to improve and build on their grammar skills.

The book itself is paperback, but it’s got some weight in it when you pick up the book. Each page is glossy and there is a wealth of information, examples and questions for many areas within grammar. Some reviews have said it’s not advanced, but I've never heard of 'Participle clauses with adverbial meaning' before, but the use of them I have. Also, some of the exercises are not consistent. For example, one set of questions asks to put either one word or a combination of the two (very, too or very/too). That's fine, as there is just the one space for the word to go in. But then, on the same page, another says add either 'even or only' but there are two spaces in each question. However, overall it’s a very in-depth book, plenty to get your teeth into.
