Margin Call [DVD]

It's a good film to watch with some business scenes that are reminiscent of my time at work.

So addictive.

Margin Call is probably the best fictional treatment of the latest economic crisis and is, to my mind, in the same league as the wonderful, acutely intelligent documentary Inside Job. The action takes place over a couple of days in the Manhattan headquarters of an unnamed highly respected investment bank and the film opens with the bank's latest round of brutal lay offs. One of the victims is a senior risk analyst who manages to pass on a file to a relatively new employee and the contents of the file are explosive and the bank is on the brink of the biggest bank collapse of all time. The cast is outstanding and includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Zachery Quinto and Jeremy Irons in top form as CEO John Tuld. It is Tuld's responsibility to make the margin call which means it is up to him to order the bank to start dumping worthless stock before news spreads of the imminent collapse of the bank an action which hanged their customers out to dry! It is now known that some banks had gone so far as to create hedge funds intended to fail which enabled them to bet against the funds and make money. It is clearly portrayed just how immoral corporations really are; their goal is to succeed and make ever more gargantuan profits, pay their employees obscene salaries without any thought to the human cost involved. The rich protect themselves and get ever richer and there is absolutely no sense of responsibility towards customers or the public interest. Highly recommended.

Having worked as a Director of many financial services firms (UK, European and American) since the 1980’s I was pleasantly surprised how realistic this snapshot of a crisis in the making was portrayed. The film was well paced and the excellent ensemble cast portrayed the situations and pressures they found themselves in well. The attitudes of those portrayed from the high to low was a generalisation but on the whole well done. The callousness was typical of the American firms for which I worked. There were few redundant scenes and you could feel the the tensions rising as the inevitability of the crisis unfolded. These were not necessarily characters with whom you could sympathise but that, perhaps was the point despite the “Labrador” moments. An engrossing film which we’ve watched several times as there is considerable depth to the characters and situations which repays careful repeated viewing,

I was extremely impressed with Margin Call. It is a very well acted and directed film about the 2008 financial crash. The film focuses on a Wall Street investment bank, and opens with the HR department laying off numerous traders who are then promptly escorted off the building. One experienced trader whilst being escorted into the lift hands a junior analyst a memory stick with the warning to be careful of its contents. The junior trader waits until everyone has left the office before proceeding to analyse its contents. He soon discovers that the information reveals the perilous financial status of the bank's books. This dire warning is passed up through the ranks of the company eventually reaching the CEO, who calls for an emergency night-time boardroom meeting. The meeting is a brilliantly acted and extremely tense moment of the film, when a drastic decision is made to cut losses by whatever means. The realisation is that it will also have financial consequences worldwide. This film has a very human aspect to it, with great acting by Kevin Spacey and Jeremy Irons in particular.

Gripping from start to finish. Jeremy Irons played the Hannibal Lector of Wall Street brilliantly, who came away with a similar body count.

Item was great but package was left under back gate in pouring rain and not brought to front and left in postbox.

A moody, intelligent chamber piece with a stellar cast, the wonderful actors obviously attracted by the script and its searching subtleties. It must be a nightmare for a screenwriter to try to depict succinctly and cinematically the nature & nub of the global financial crisis - in particular how an investment bank has become lethally over-exposed to sub-prime junk. JC Chandor just about pulls it off. Relish the performances of Demi Moore, Kevin Spacey, Simon Baker, but above all Jeremy Irons: the big dog in the room, he not only own the firm, he owns the film. He doesn't know that much about derivatives and swaps - he doesn't need to. He's a salesman, and a natural leader. The best line in the movie is his, to the young analyst (Zachary Quinto) who has just alerted the firm to the coming apocalypse: talk to me as if I were a child, or a golden retriever. It's a minor masterpiece. Has JCC got another in him?

Thriller ambientato nel mondo dell'alta finanza. Una grande banca di investimenti rischia il tracollo con la crisi del 2008. Quando un giovane analista si accorge di essere entrato in possesso di importanti informazioni che confermano il crollo del mercato finanziario, il direttore ed i capi dell'azienda, per tutta la notte studiano il modo per salvarsi dal disastro senza porsi il minimo scrupolo di addossare le perdite a terzi causandone l'inevitabile fallimento. Ma qualcuno, ancora dotato di un minimo di coscienza, tenta di opporsi. In questo film viene perfettamente descritto questo mondo falso e fittizio: un castello di carte che prima o poi rischia di collassare su sé stesso. Un film molto duro e diretto, senza storie parallele, solo ed unicamente incentrato sull'operato di questi "squali" per salvare i propri interessi. Cast di tutto riguardo: Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Stanley Tucci e Demi Moore. Buona la qualità del BD.

" Ich bedauere außerordentlich, was wir leider tun müssen- aber dies........... sind ungewöhnliche Zeiten. " DER GROSSE CRASH polarisiert und hypnotisierte mich richtiggehend. Irons, Tucci und Spacey sowieso. Fantastische Schauspieler. Ich war sofort mittendrin, obwohl ich nicht viel Wissen über dieses komplizierte Thema besitze. Glaubwürdig und verständlich dargestellt, von namhaften Profi- Darstellern. Der Einblick in die Finanz- und Börsenwelt, der Sturm, der sich dort zusammenbraut- fesselnd. Nur. Sämtliche Figuren bewegen sich in den obersten Etagen vom gläsernen Wolkenkratzer- die enorme Fallhöhe, wie ein Symbol für die Protagonisten.....die ihnen durch den schwindelerregenden Anblick stets bewusst wird. DER GROSSE CRASH: Zwar ist die Sprache der Börsianer, die echt komplexe Mathematik oft unverständlich für mich, doch diese Welt ist eh unerklärbar- selbst für manche, die in diesem Job selber tätig sind. Wie ich hier erfahren durfte. Ich denke, darum arbeitete der Regisseur auch teilweise mit Unschärfen, denn niemand kann in dieser Welt noch klar sehen, die Dinge begreifen. " Wie viele sind noch übrig? " - " Etwa Dreißig. " - " Rufen Sie sie zusammen, ich möchte etwas mitteilen. " Gefangene der Wirtschaft, Sklaven des Aktienmarktes- Kontrollen entgleiten. Einfach faszinierend, toll gespielt. Nicht nur für Außenstehende. " Wir werden es durchziehen, das wird nicht lustig. " ************************************************** Story: Wall Street 2008: Eine dramatische Achterbahnfahrt über hohe Einsätze, Vermögensberater, Banker, Börsenmakler, Gewinner und Verlierer. Und um, genau......KEINE Gewissensbisse. Die alle Beteiligten mindestens an den Rand der Katastrophe katapultiert...... .............................................................................. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fazit: Der Film DER GROSSE CRASH konzentriert sich auf die emotionalen Aspekte. Und schafft es meiner Meinung nach quasi aus dem Nichts, anhand Top- Schauspielern, ordentliche und absolute Spannung aufzubauen. In einer Geschichte, die sich innerhalb von nur Achtundzwanzig Stunden! bitterst erzählt. Manche Rezensenten bemängeln das bzgl. unsachgemässer oder unzureichender Entwicklung der Finanzkrise von damals. Doch das ist nicht der Fokus des Films- der Bonusteil erklärt noch einmal genau, um was es Regisseur und Drehbuchautor J.C. Chandor eigentlich und überhaupt ging. DER GROSSE CRASH- eine abstrakt erscheinende Welt, in der sich alles nur um Zahlen dreht. Mit gekonnten Dialogen. Private Schicksale gegen ein Business, dass seine widerwärtige Fratze zeigt. " Peter hat sich deiner Modellrechnung gewidmet. " - " Tatsächlich? " - " Hat `n Sturm ausgelöst. " - " Das denke ich mir. " Und J.C. Chandor ist es gelungen, diesen Film so zu gestalten, dass ich/ man selbst als Laie des Themas Wirtschaft und Finanzen die Handlung verstehe/ versteht. Auf hohes Fachchinesisch wird weitgehend verzichtet- und die Karten offen auf den Tisch gelegt. Astrein. Und dafür bekommt der Film von mir Fünf unerbittliche Sternchen. Da gibt`s nix zu wettern. " Es ist doch bloß Geld, imaginär......mehr nicht. Bloß Papier, mit Gesichtern drauf- damit wir uns bei der Suche nach Nahrung nicht umbringen....daran ist nichts Schlechtes. La película aborda el tortuoso estallido de la presente crisis financiera. Sorprende lo granado del reparto en una ópera prima de un director novel, no vi la película en cine en su momento y me alegro de haberlo hecho ahora. Lo más bajo de la condición humana en el más lujoso y reluciente entorno. Merece la pena por su calidad artística y por su mensaje, claro duro y directo, difícil destacar a un actor en el conjunto, todos lo hacen extraordinariamente bien.

Great movie. Really shows the greed of wall street and how easy it was to bring down the financial markets and banks. Great acting by Jeromy Irons and Kevin Spacey.

La première ligne écrite sur la jaquette du Blu-ray est : "Le meilleur film jamais réalisé sur Wall Street". Et bien, je partage totalement cet avis. J'ai été captivé par ce "Margin Call" (marge de manœuvre) décrivant le déroulement des 36 heures précédant la "grande crise financière" de 2008 au sein d'une grande banque d'affaire (c'est un quasi huit clos mais au combien passionnant). Nous sommes spectateurs d'un enchaînement de péripéties incroyables dans un espace temps très court, suite à la découverte par un jeune et brillant analyste de cette banque, que la situation financière de la société est catastrophique, car complètement polluée par un énorme portefeuille d'avoirs toxiques qui peuvent la mettre en faillite rapidement si le marché s'arrête d'acheter ! Tout se passe en une nuit, où pour sauver leur peaux et celle de l'entreprise, les dirigeants décident de "bazarder" à prix casser ces avoirs toxiques, afin d'apurer leurs comptes, avant que le marché ne découvre que l'ensemble du système financier fonctionne avec une logique de mesure du risque complètement dépassée. La décision, qui va être très difficile à prendre et qui fera l'objet de beaucoup de discussion et de manœuvres entre les protagonistes, est quasi suicidaire pour la suite du fonctionnement des marchés financier et pour Wall Street en particulier. Mais elle est néanmoins prise en connaissance de cause, sachant que cette vente forcée est une tromperie qui va ruiner beaucoup de leurs clients et provoquer une perte de confiance dans le marché et un effondrement du château de cartes financiers. Il s'agit de sauver les meubles et tant pis pour les autres ! La narration est de qualité. Elle laisse même l'impression que l'on y comprend (un peu) quelque chose. Le scénario est superbement construit et il nous emmène dans une histoire menée à un rythme très soutenu, où l'on ne s'ennuie pas. Les acteurs sont prodigieux et donnent l'impression d'avoir toujours fait partie de ce monde très spécifique, maîtrisant parfaitement leur rôle, apportant une authenticité remarquable à la description des situations, et pourtant nous naviguons dans un milieu où les vocabulaires et les outils sont très techniques et complexes. J'ai été impressionné par : - Kevin Spacey (Sam) et Paul Bettany (Will) les responsables des traders, qui auront à mener l'opérations, - Jeremy Irons (John) l'impressionnant "Big Boss" qui pendra la décision avec beaucoup de froideurs et un certain détachement et dont les réparties sont impressionnantes : "pour survivre à Wall Street, il faut être : soit le Premier, soit le Meilleur, ou Tricher" (et il veut être le premier à sortir de ce guêpier) - "ce n'est pas grave, ce n'est que de l'argent... (?)... - Zachary Quinto (Peter), celui qui trouvera la faille, - Demi Moore (Sarah) et Stanley Tucci (Eric) de la Direction du contrôle des risque, qui avaient pressenti ce qui allait se passer, mais qui n'ont pas été écouté. La description de ce univers cruel est très bien réalisée, avec en toile de fond permanente; la conséquence de la crise avec son lot de licenciements menés à rythme effréné et avec froideur par des RH qui glacent le dos, l'omniprésence de l'argent dans toutes les conversations (souvent des sommes colossales qui dépassent l'entendement pour le simple mortel que je suis - ce qui semble compter, ce n'est pas ce qui vous êtes, mais ce que vous valez) avec ce que cela génère en terme de cupidité, de tromperie et de "chacun" pour soi. L'Être humain ne vaut pas grand chose dans ce dispositif. Ce film est impressionnant et je suis très satisfait d'avoir acquis ce BR pour pouvoir le visionner à nouveau, car il y a beaucoup de chose à voir et à comprendre encore.
