Does it really pick up as much as 8 pounds? I need something that will get jars of pickles, syrup, peanut butter, etc. from top shelves at store

Technically it will pick up over 8 pounds. I picked up a 10-pound barbell with it because I was able to get the U under the barbell end. Practically you will be limited by how smooth and dense the target is. You will not be able to grasp 8 pounds using just the tips, and smooth things will rotate out - I would not trust large jars of pickles, syrup, peanut butter with this. You can only trust jars you can get the U entirely around. I have picked up a small peanut butter bottle with it - just make very sure you have the jar firmly in its grip and not rotating, or you will drop a lot of jars.

What about using it to pick up debris like leaves and pinecones at the bottom of my fish pond? (Not sure if it will stand up to use under water.)

I use mine for river litter pick-up. It's done okay so far, but the "grabber" ends will bend if trying to pull on something buried in the bank a bit. As far as the wear under water, mine have held up and I've had them since February. I've been using them at least monthly since. I hope that helps!

How wide do the jaws open?

The jaws open to 6 inches at their tips and 4.5 inches at the base of the pads.

Will it unscrew a ceiling screw?

If it will turn easily by hand maybe, if not you really should use a screwdriver.I have bent the arms on mine several times. They could be stronger. Plus it is really made to lift something up or lower it down. Such as a soup can, jar of pickles, coins on the floor, etc. I have gotten to where I can pick up a dime off the ground, as well as screws,nails, etc.

Great grabber!

I used this post ankle surgery initially, and it was so helpful. The other brands I tried could not grip as well as the Unger grabber. Now I use it around the house and I love it. Worth the money.

Must have tool.

Elderly person with an aged back, can not live without one. Have now purchased six units, work well pick up objects smaller than other brands. Two in house, one in the shed and another in the car. Love this item, great inthe garden also, just can not find it. Oh well buy another one, no make that two.
