If you buy only one photography book make it this one
Probably the best photography book you can buy. This is for a friend who has just got into photography since I wasn’t willing to part with my copy

Simple and Clear
Many books on photography do their best to confuse and make the whole process appear complicated. This book is the antidote. Using simple to understand explanations of why and how to take different types of picture with examples to illustrate the concepts, this book has the capacity to greatly improve your pictures. Add Understanding Composition from the same author and you will have all the tools you need to take great pictures!

The Answers I Needed
Arguably premature after reading only 40 pages, my review is based on finding answers that no other writer I've read has provided. In just those few pages I have more than justified the purchase. At first the explanations might seem simplistic and patronising but I think the writer is operating at another level: think intuitive rather than simplistic. Serious teachers find ways to make things understood at a depth where the associated knowledge quickly becomes second nature. My impression is that Mr Peterson is just such a teacher. Looking forward to studying the rest of the work and then putting it all into practice. Essential.

Best intro to photography
This is one of the best books I've read on getting out of using 'auto' mode. I've read a couple of others but got bored reading them really quickly. This one had me hooked from the first page. The writing is pretty funny but to the point. Theres also not pages and pages of writing and its all really easy to understand. The pictures in the book are brilliant as well. If you're looking for a book introducing you to moving on from using auto mode, this one is it.

Starts with the basics and explains the principles of photography clearly. Some of the similes are a bit forced, but it's very useful and instructive
