Understanding the World. The Atlas of Infographics Hardcover – 15 Oct. 2014

This book is big and heavy and a very substantial expensive looking gift. Everyone who picks it up becomes engrossed and my whole family enjoy it, a great book for the coffee table to create conversation!

This is an absolutely beautiful big book which operates on so many different levels. It is crammed full of information, on a huge range of fascinating different subjects, which is delivered to the reader in drop dead gorgeous graphic illustrations, mostly in full colour, and each unique. For the logical reader, it is divided into broadly related sections, such as Nature and Environment, Science and Technology, Society and People and Culture and Media, among others, but, simultaneously, it is a random browser's dream. I love just turning a page to see what I can find in this giant depository of visual delights and amazing data. As an extra personal bonus, each illustration has accompanying, explanatory texts written in English, German and French which help me to improve my vocabulary in each language. Overall, I think that it is seriously underpriced. If I could take only one book to an uninhabited desert island, this would be the one I would choose. But, be aware! This is a big book. If you don't have either a desk or coffee table, get one! Or be prepared to lie on the floor to look through it.
