The Odyssey: Geraldine McCaughrean (Puffin Classics)

Great book

Amazing story that is easy to understand. This book is the reason I now like classics, many climaxes all better than the one before it.

My daughter had to have this to study in year 4. The book is well written so that younger readers can understand it. The chapters are well written with some lovely illustrations.

Read it to my class (age 9-10), displayed on the whiteboard with kindle online. Absolutely brilliant. The children were enthralled and it inspired them with their own writing, particularly to be adventurous with their word choices. Great book.

Beautifully retold by Geraldine McCaughrean and if like myself you love art then Victor Ambrus brings once again the excitement, passion and wonder to every page his brush touches well worth buying

I love the story of Odysseus and am all for versions of classic tales for children but this one was missing the spark of adventure. The vivid colourful escapades he encountered before being reunited with Penelope were all a bit flat - the final chapter was the best, a shame as all the main characters were there - Circe, Polyphemus and the Gods. If you are going to write a very familiar story then the book needs to stand out amongst others and this one doesn't. I appreciate this is a short book but it could have included far more characterisation, the main players should leap out from the page to boost a child's imagination. A reasonable introduction to the Greek myths and legends it could have been so much better. The first couple of chapters showed promise but although still readable the story then just meandered along. i did like the final chapter and will certainly be digging out more books to read on this subject. The illustrations at the beginning of each chapter were awful, shame the illustrator of the front cover hadn't done the pictures throughout the book as well. Overall a basic introduction to the wanderings of Odysseus but could have been better. I do like this Puffin Classics series for children usually but this was weak. 2.5 out of 5 really but rounded up to 3. I do think the previous reviewer was a little unfair to give such a low mark on the fact that they hadn't checked exactly what they were purchasing - Puffin books would hardly be an in depth translation for adults!!! ( I appreciate I have given a low score but my review is based on the exact book bought!!)

Great purchase

This abridged version of the Odyssey was absolutely wonderful. I would read aloud portions to my kids, who at the age of 10 and 12, would press me to do "just one more chapter." The pictures are well done. It also demonstrated great opportunities to discuss ancient cultures, mythology, etc. You will want a copy of this on your children's bookshelf.

Com certeza um dos melhores livros que já comprei, além de ter chegado dentro do prazo prometido pela Amazon, ele é pequenininho e leve. Amei demais, e a escrita em inglês é bem fácil, por ser considerado um livro infanto juvenil. Muito satisfeita com a compra!

Enjoyable and an easy read. I highly recommend reading as it gives a good account of the retelling of the Odyssey.

The book was requested for my son who is in high school. It was an assignment for his english class. The shipping cost almost as much as the book. The book was easy reading and detailed the classic so that he understood the story.
