Starbucks Instant Medium Roast and Microground Coffee (Pike Place Roast) 8 – 3.3g Packets

I love this coffee as it reminds me of Seattle. But $25 for pack is crazy price, that's why 3*. You could normally buy same thing in Starbucks shop for $10. Unfortunately not always they have Pike Place.

I’ve been looking for a good “instant” coffee for camping and hiking. My main requirements were that it had to be in very light weight single serve waterproof packets and, of course, taste good. Pretty much all instant coffees can be found in single serve waterproof packets; however, the second part is questionable, especially compared to a good fresh grind pour over. But, when on the trail, I still need a good cup of joe, even if it’s cold instant. So, I read a heap of reviews, and picked out some of the highest rated (Starbucks VIA Instant Pikes Place Medium Roast, and Mount Hagen Fairtrade Organic Instant, 25 packets for $9.95 -about 40 cents a packet), and threw in some Café Bustelo Espresso Instant Coffee someone had picked up at the local supermarket for comparison. Also bought some Starbucks VIA Instant Caffe Latte just for funzies. - Starbucks VIA Instant Pikes Place Medium Roast, 8 packets for $5.98 or about $1.23 a packet (though you can get larger 50 count packs to get the cost down to around 80 cents a packet) - Starbucks VIA Instant Caffe Latte, 5 packets for $5.08 - $1.02 a packet - Mount Hagen Fairtrade Organic Instant, 25 packets for $9.95 -40 cents a packet Over several days, my daughter and I tried the various coffees black, with half-and-half, with half-and-half and sugar, and with some Coffee Mate liquid creamer. We also compared this to some of our ground coffee. Each time, we used one packet for one cup of water. Final verdict pretty much reflected the online reviews I had read. The Starbuck’s was the best and as good or better than a store-bought ground coffee, but still not as good as fresh ground. It was surprisingly tasty with a rich roasted slightly nutty flavor. The Mount Hagen was a close second, but had a slightly tart aftertaste like some Ethiopian Kochere coffees I’ve had -good if you like that kind of thing. We thought the Mount Hagen was just slightly weak as well, but we are partial to bolder darker roast coffees. The Mount Hagen also seemed sensitive to getting the water too hot and developing a slightly burnt taste. That’s important to me, as you can’t control the water temp too well on the trail. The Café Bustelo espresso was a weak third to the Starbucks and Mount Hagen. I know a lot of people like it, but Café Bustelo, IMHO, is somewhat of an acquired taste. If you’re cost conscious and just want a “decent” cup of coffee, I’d say go for the Mount Hagen as it’s less than half the cost of the Starbucks or Café Bustelo. If you want an instant that’s closer to a good ground drip coffee, then spend a little more and get the Starbucks. The Starbucks Caffe Latte was not up to our expectations as far as a latte goes. It was more like a thick hot chocolate with just a hint of coffee taste. The single packets were just too much for one cup of water as it’s just too thick and almost chalky like that. I would not recommend, if you’re looking for a Caffe Latte with a good milk and coffee flavor. But mixing it with one and a half cups of water made a decent hot chocolate.

For 15 years I have had at least one Starbucks Venti iced coffee a day. If I wasn't going to Starbucks, then I went to Coffee Bean or Chick-fil-A and got a large iced coffee there. (However I never liked the iced coffee at these other places nearly as much as I liked the Starbucks iced coffee. ) When the pandemic hit in early 2020, I started buying these Starbucks Via Instant Coffee packets at the grocery store. After a month or two, I switched to buying them online from Amazon at a much lower price. I have the monthly deliveries which is really nice. The price per box of 8 is cheaper at Amazon than at the grocery store or a Starbucks store. I have two plastic Starbucks Venti cups at home. I heat one packet with water in the microwave in a coffee cup. I then let it cool for 20-30 minutes. I then fill one of my plastic Starbucks Venti cup with ice, pour the cooled coffee into it and put in the refrigerator to chill. Buying these packets from Amazon costs me about 65 cents per Venti cup at home versus the current $3.65 price at Starbucks. I really like the Pike Place Roast. While I still go to Starbucks occasionally, I am home a lot more than I used to be because the pandemic permanently changed my habits. So, this new habit has really saved me money and I now have 2-3 Venti cups a day since I really enjoy it.

This is some very strong coffee. I found myself working from home, trying to power through the afternoon to my 6pm clock out. No coffee or tea in the morning--I like to only drink caffeine when I really feel like I need it some days. This was one of those days. Impulsively I decided to make a quick cup using this packet at around 3:30PM. "It's not too late in the day," I thought, ignoring the advice of thousands of nutritionists. "I doubt it will keep me up tonight." I was wrong. Around 5PM, I could feel that familiar buzz begin to audibly caw. After dinner, I still felt like I had an insatiable urge to work, to be on my computer, to do SOMETHING, anything but settle down. I tried to settle down for bed, but hours after my fiance had drifted off (she's the difficult sleeper in our relationship), my mind was still racing. Around 3AM, I snuck out of bed, still wide awake, to do some chores quietly. My body was tired, but my mind was still going. The single packet of this coffee was powering me. It might have been at about 5 or 6 in the morning that I finally could settle down for a nap before the start of the next workday. Safe to say, I only drink this packet coffee before 12pm nowadays. It slaps.
