Product Description Heart-warming drama about unfulfilled dreams, innocence and unrequited love. Janet (Maggie Smith) and Ursula (Judi Dench) are sisters who discover a castaway on the beach below their house. They nurse him back to health with the help of the local doctor (David Warner) and discover he has a talent as a musician. However, the castaway has an unsettling effect on the sisters, especially Ursula, whose life changes forever. desertcart.co.uk Review Ladies in Lavender is exactly the sort of film that prompts people to question, "Why dont they make films like this anymore?" Its a delicately-paced story of two aging sisters--Ursula (Dame Judi Dench) and Janet (Maggie Smith--who live together on a Cornwall beach in 1936. They discover a foreign stranger washed ashore (Daniel Bruhl), and while nursing him back to health make an astonishing discovery: the young man, a Pole, is a phenomenally gifted violinist. And Ursula finds her feelings for the man go far deeper than merely maternal. Writer and director Charles Dance has crafted an admirable debut. Ladies in Lavender a tenderly done and bittersweet story of innocence and regret. Though the dialogue sometimes seems too earnest, and he has an over-reliance on slow motion cinematography, he still allows his two talented leads enough time and space to shine. Its only unfortunate that more effort did not go into the DVD release of the film: the extras only consist of soundbites from the cast and crew, which add little insight. --Ted Kord Review: Lovely movie - lovely movie, lovely story. Review: A Masterpiece - Ladies in Lavender has to be a masterpiece of film-making and acting but what else would one expect from Dudi Dench, Maggi Smith, Miriam Margoles and Charles Dance? It is an unlikely story of a young man being washed up onto a Cornish beach in the 1930s and being found and nursed back to health by two aging sisters. It then becomes a story of love, jealousy and suspicion. It was so refreshing to watch a gentle film that covered the whole range of human emotions. Daniel Bruhl was superb as the Polish violinist, his youthful vitality being in total contrast to Ursula and Janet. The music brought tears to my eyes as did the inevitable fate of the two sisters. It was so refreshing to watch a film devoid of violence but it takes incredible acting to draw one into such a story and the main charcters did that. It is a film I will watch over and over again.

Ladies in Lavender
This is a very good film, which I found absorbing. It may not suit everybody,as the subject matter does not really fit into any of the genres popular in modern movies. It is the story of two elderly single ladies, living alone in a large house on the edge of the beautiful coastline of Cornwall. One morning an event occurs which turns their very ordinary lives upside down. A young man is washed up onto the shore next to their home, more dead than alive. The ladies bring him into their home, and nurse him back to health. The young man,s background is a mystery, as he can speak no English, and tells them he is Polish. As the ladies try to teach him some English, gradually more is revealed. This is a seemingly gentle film, as he is gradually adopted into the local community, and the two ladies become increasingly attached to him. The film deals sensitively with the shifting relationships between the main characters, and the emotions aroused within the two ladies. The character played by Judy Dench is drawn romantically to the young man, and she struggles inwardly with the dawning sel-realisation of what is happening to her. The other old lady played by Maggie Smith, is horrified when she becomes aware of what is taking place within her sister, and her disapproval is in constant conflict with her love for her sister, and her own affection for the young man. Any body who thinks that when people become old, they no longer have the intense feelings usually attributed to youth, should see this film. There is joy, but also pain, love, but also jealousy. As the threads gradually weave together and the plot evolves, all the main characters are seen to grow and the story ends as it began, with the two ladies once again alone, wandering along the beach. It has been an interlude in their lives, however, it has changed them forever. This film goes below the outward surface of everyday life, to reveal how deeply the human heart can feel in the realm of relationships. It is not for any one who is looking for thrills and excitement, but its intuitive portrayal of the complex emotions aroused, by the coming of this young man, touched me deeply, and I think it will do the same for others.

Poignant and lovely
Enchanting film, superbly acted with every character perfectly cast. I've watched it again and again and only love it more. It is tender funny, sad and charts an unrequited passion of a much older woman for a young manplayed by Judi Dench and Daniel.Bruhl- with sensitivity and depth. Maggie Smith is peerless as Janet, Ursulas acerbic, grounded but kind sister, and the indirect rivalry between them over the young musician Andrea is subtly and brilliantly played. Set in the years before ww2, the beautiful Cornish scenery and a glorious array of local characters inc Miriam Margoyles as the sisters' rude, bossy, warm hearted cook , give you the intimate sense that you are living the story with Janet, Ursula and Andrea, and Natascha McElhone as the beautiful rival who stumbles on their world.

A sparkling jewel in today's world of cinema
It is a sensitive story about love and growth: the love an elderly spinster fosters for a young man the sea had literally deposited on her doorstep in Cornwall, her anguish when he leaves and her acceptance in the end that she has to let go, enriched by this brief encounter. This love story with a difference has been masterly directed by Charles Dance (who, up to now, I've only experienced as an actor, usually interpreting the villain of the story) Judi Dench ("M" in James Bond films) very convincingly and sensitively interprets the role of the elderly spinster, offset by a Maggie Smith who firmly has her feet on the ground. Daniel Bruehl, a young German actor ("Goodbye Lenin") is delightful in the role of Andrea, a Polish young violinist, who is shipwrecked on the coast of Cornwall. The music is heavenly.....AND excellently "dosed". Usually the music is much too loud in most films, especially American, so that the dialogue is difficult to follow. This is not the case here and the film is an all-round pleasure. Thank you Charles Dance! The film is directed at a broad audience, both male and female.....even my husband, who prefers action films, thoroughly enjoyed it.

For hopeless Romantics only
I saw this film at the Cinema and it moved me. Perhaps it just come along at a poignant time in my life - or perhaps it was just the vulnerability and believability of their performances. But I defy any romantic not to be affected by this work. I was so much, that I vowed never to see it again. At the right moment it's not a film you watch - it's a film you live. It would be like revisiting an old lover's haunt - nothing but disappointment can come from it. However I was wrong. An Amazon voucher, a wandering mouse and the deed was done. Did I regret trying to recapture that moment. Not a bit of it. Some stories don't need the scale the big screen. In fact a small screen and a crackling winter fireside only adds to the intimacy and romance. If you enjoy quality acting and a touching storyline, well told - pull up a chair for the Ladies in Lavender. Ahhh, bless... sniff.

Andrea spricht jetzt etwas englisch. Warum also 5 ganze P?

Maggie Smith and Judi Dench are superb actors. They play the part of two old sisters who nurse back to health a young man. The drama is charming, realistic, and in the end a bit sad - for the sisters. The efforts of these two fine actors are backed up by good performances by the young man and by the villagers. This movie is memorable, as long as you are in the mood for something gentle and subtle, and complex.
