does this also turn off outside tap?

It will turn off whatever taps are on the other side of the switch. However the unit itself must be mounted indoors.

Is there an option to buy the product with compression couplings?

Yes, Surestop do a version with with compression joints instead of push fit.

Can the plastic push fitting be used on copper?

Yes the 15mm plastic fittings are designed to be used on plastic or copper. There is a toothed ring inside the fitting which grips the pipe once fitted, and can be used on 15mm, or half inch as they are so similar they are interchangeable in most circumstances. HOWEVER this does not apply to 22mm or 28mm copper pipe - the old imperial equivalents of 3/4 and 1 inch differ too much when compared to the metric hence adapter connectors must be used.

does it need to be wired up to electrics?

No electrics either mains or battery required. It works using water pressure alone. Both the remote switch and the thin pipe, that looks like a wire, connecting it to the valve are hydraulic. You need to be sure you do not trap or knick the pipe and it must not be allowed to freeze.
