The A to Z of Glock & Xylophone: The Right Route For You : Clarke, Glenn R: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Learning about the glockenspiel - I found this book very informative. It certainly leaves you with a more understanding of the glockenspiel and the music you can make from it. It tells you all you need to know about learning to play the glockenspiel correctly. It’s not just about hitting the bars with a beater it goes in depth about how to hit the bars all about delay and the different types of beaters for different sounds. Everything you need in one book Review: GLOCKENSPIEL - The content of this tutor is excellent in the way it is laid out. It is basic & just what anyone learning to play the instrument requires to know. I can say it is an excellent buy. However, the book is in the perfect binding format & is therefore very difficult to open out on a music stand. To get round this I took the book to pieces & bound it with binding rings so that it opened out flat on the stand.

Not sure who the market is
First of all, perhaps if the product description had been a description of the book rather than a poorly written hagiography of the author I might not have bought this 'by mistake'. Since glockenspiel - indeed any tuned percussion - is an instrument which I'd expect to be being learned by people with pre-existing basic musical knowledge, I wouldn't expect a glockenspiel tutor book to be principally covering the grade 0 music theory syllabus. Now this book wasn't quite as basic as starting with malteser notes and polo mint notes, but it wasn't much further on in its level of music theory covered. I'd also expect a tutor book about tuned percussion to cover specific technique for tuned percussion - when to cross sticks, when not to cross sticks, four stick technique if it went that far in advance, etc. Whereas this book I think only even used the word 'glockenspiel' about twice within the cover, just to tell you to hold the sticks in such a way and to hit the thing without leaving the stick on the key to dampen the sound, there was nothing about how to actually *play* the instrument, and the exercises and studies within are entirely generic - the book could just as easily be a first trumpet tutor book as it is a glockenspiel tutor. As a music graduate to masters level wanting to self-teach glockenspiel to myself I could be entirely not the market for this book, whence I've given it two stars rather than the one which I might have done. On the other hand, as somebody with a new glockenspiel wanting a book to give me better guidance than just stumbling around myself, I think I had a reasonable expectation this might have gone some way towards fulfilling that need.

Ok
Got this for my 10 year old. Looks like a good book, but bought it months ago and my son hasn't even used it.

Appears suitable for beginner. Long distance gift for a child. I can’t comment further until I see what kid can do with it over time.

Great book for the beginning musician. Some theory and lots of practical advice.

This book assumes you know nothing about music, concentrating on how to read notes, rhythms, etc. Meanwhile, the little written about the glockenspiel are poorly done. For instance, the part on how to hold the mallets has only a very small black and white photo that doesn't even show thumb and finger positioning. There's only a few learning tunes toward the back that might be worthwhile. A waste of money for the new glock player that knows anything about music at all.
