Review: to understand what is it you are doing to your body when you train, and how - An amazing book ! For each muscle or group of muscle, the books shows : - anatomy diagrams of the muscle and its surroundings - specificity of training this muscle (why it's important, what effects can the training have both for health and for appearance) - exercises to do for that muscle with minimum material (body weight only, or dumbbells, or resistance bands) - exercises to do for that muscle with more equipment (machine, barbell, etc) - pro and cons of exercises - how to stretch that muscle There are also a few diagrams of natural body fat storage areas, which I found profoundly disturbing but very informative. The author strives to provide a book adapted to women, for which he is to be commended, however he does slip into a little sexism at times (example : explains how pectoral muscle work for holding weights by saying "holding a baby"). The author wants to interest as many women as possible, so he indeed tries to hammer home the lesson : if you train and get toned, you are going to look better, so do train... Reading the book in between the lines, it's obvious he really wants to tell you "heels are bad for you, don't wear them, ever" but he is not saying it. I had the impression he just wants women to train more for their health and is ready to write whatever will convince them to do so, and since he thinks women will train for beauty, not for health, he is using that as an incentive. I can't blame him for that. I train because I want to be stronger, but I'm not the majority... TL,DR : great book to have if you want to actually understand what is happening in your body when you train ! Review: Well written - Although I've yet to put this into practice, this book is well written and geared towards the female body. I need to do this!! The book is well written and the quality of the book is good.

Impressed with this book. Yes there are some 'iffy' references to the motivations of women to improve their strength i.e. vanity and beauty references but if you can overlook this the book is well written and well researched. Women have different training needs and outcomes to men, and we need to know what obstacles we need to overcome and what is honestly achievable in terms of muscle growth etc. The book is well structured, clear, easy sections focusing on the development of training plans. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to develop their strength regardless of primary motivations.

Great for anyone wanting to know how to efficiently target specific muscles
I've been looking for a book like this for a while. My main focus was to understand what exercises target specific muscle groups and how to execute them safely and correctly. I also wanted to marry this up with stretches appropriate to avoid injury (having injured myself more than once through exercise). This book does precisely that and more. I've given it 4 stars rather than 5 as the book isn't particularly easy to navigate for quick reference and I would have liked it to have had better referencing labels, but otherwise it's an informative and well written book and I recommend it.

This book is brilliant!
This book is brilliant for women's strength training, very good pictures and descriptions of exercises with easy to follow technique instructions. I have tried a couple of the workouts which left me feeling like I'd had a workout so looking forward to doing more.

Get this book! Really helpful for understanding how to add weights to exercise program. (+) nicely organized - easy to read, not too wordy, chock full of helpful info, nice use of pics; anatomy sketches are beautiful & useful to see what areas are being targeted; GREAT for post meno women but also for younger women (AND gives them things to think about as they age); good mix of exercises.. warm-ups/ stretches, free weights, machine assisted weights, and calisthenics.. tho most is weights, which is good. I had gotten another book "anatomy for strength & fitness training" but didn't like it because the exercises were far too simple.. more like exercises for PT / recovery. (-) only complaint.. spiral binding PLS!!

This is a GREAT reference for any woman attempting to set up her own strength training program at home. Full of super detailed diagrams of the musculature that will be worked by any exercise. Exercises are provided for using dumbbells/barbells at home AND for using machines at the gym. There is information provided regarding the differences in muscles between women and men as well; ie our arm structure, which is different! Appropriate cautions are given for hazards of any particular exercise; ie for squats, do not let your knees surpass your toes. Complete routines are provided at the end of the book. Love it! It is all you will need to get started and continue for quite some time!!!
