Could you use a straw with this mug?

A small diameter straw yes. I assume you mean with the lid on.

Is the flip lid easy to open ( have arthritis so hands not not very strong)

The flip lid is Very easy to open. I suffer from Reynaulds. However sometimes the actual lid isn't as easy - but doable. It is a Great travel mug strong secure I can chuck it in the car and nothing comes out. Give it a go - you can always send it back :)
