I have ordered one of these in brilliant steel but the rim of the lid is matt silver; is this how it should look or is it faulty?

No, just the lid lifts and should close slowly when you release the pedal

How would you best describe the colours called matt steel fingerprint proof and metallic grey? Trying to figure out which is most suitable.

Ours is white so I've no experience of the two finishes you mention. However, I would think the Matt steel would look unpainted whereas the metallic grey would be a metallic paint finish. Hope that helps.
