This Compost Thermometer does a solid job of taking temperature readings in my pallet compost bins. The long probe easily penetrates deep into the material, giving me a more accurate sense of what’s going on in the heart of the pile - from fresh clippings to well-rotted manure. Being able to monitor temps properly helps me manage my bins more effectively. However, while it measures well, it isn’t as robust as I’d hoped. The metal probe that actually takes the temperature bends quite easily, so you have to handle it very carefully - which feels a bit counter-intuitive when you’re working with compost that can be dense and awkward. A sturdier probe would make this tool much more comfortable to use regularly. Overall, it’s a useful thermometer for home composting, but treat it gently and you’ll get good service out of it.

Excellent product. Well made and good value for money. The long probe is just the job for checking the temperature of my alloment compost bins. Will be buying more in the future. Would highly recommend.

VERY GOOD QUALITY

As suggested by various famous gardeners. This is a very useful tool for home compost making. I can see at a glance where the process has got to. The display is colour coded and easy to read. This is my second purchase as we expand our compost production on our small holding. They are robust thermometers so if we build yet another bay then I’ll be buying a third.

The length is really useful - especially when you are trying to check the core temperature of a conventional (1m cubed or more) compost heap, or something like a HotBin. My one reads about 5-10°C low, but I suspect that as this is not really a high-precision device, you will take pot-luck on how accurate yours is. As long as you calibrate it with ice-water and boiling water, you should get a rough idea how far out the thermometer is. Once you know that, it's no problem to obtain the readings you need. :) A downside is that there will be moisture ingress around the glass and the tube joint at the back of the head. This means you cannot leave it out in the rain (or inside a compost bin) without it getting bad condensation in the observation window. If you have access to a thin capillary sealant (like that used for windscreen repair), you can apply that around the glass and the body to keep the water out. It also works on the crimped rod seal at the back, but I would suggest the use of something the Furnox LS-X silicone jointing compound for that. At a push, you can *carefully* work LS-X under the glass/metal seal at the front with a thumb or finger. Careful though, the glass is VERY THIN! The other thing I would suggest is that if it is not in continuous use, that you keep the plastic an card container that it came in. This has saved mine from damage on more than one occasion - it does tend to roll rather well off a table... Very pleased with purchase, but wish it was waterproofed during manufacture.

J'adore ce truc, sérieusement ! Il suffit de l'enfoncer et de voir à quel point il est chaud ! Je l'ai depuis quelques mois maintenant et je n'ai pas à me plaindre. Il me dit presque instantanément si mon compost a besoin de plus de matière verte, plus de matière brune ou plus de matière liquide. C'est un excellent complément à mes outils de jardinage en permaculture et j'en suis ravie !
