Septuagint with Apocrypha: Greek and English

The LXX is a book of very high importance as a witness to the text of the Hebrew Bible, AKA the Old Testament. As the LXX pre-dates the Hebrew Masoretic text by over 700 years, it is vital to understanding the accepted Canon of the OT. This is a well set out version, with the usual English translation on one side. It has the full Apocrapha, including 3 & 4 Maccabees. A must have for a Bible scholar.

A very good purchase, it has the greek translation ( not sure if it's koine greek ) and the english translation on the sides, good paper and a sturdy book cover; also it has a conprehensive introduction about the historical account of the book. Overall it's worrh reading and having.

Fantastic book. It has really helped me with Greek. The influence the Septuagint had on the Greek used in the New Testament means that this is essential for anyone trying to understand the New Testament in Greek. In fact the Greek of the Septuagint was probably used as the basis for the Greek of the New Testament - based on the similar style and wording. Reading the Septuagint can therefore shed light on the meaning of certain New Testament verses. For example the Greek word for lord "kyrios" is used in the Septuagint to translate the Hebrew name for God. The connotations of this word having something to do with a deity don't exist in Classical Greek. Therefore when a Greek student finds Jesus being referred to as "kyrios" in the New Testament, the implication that he is divine could be missed by someone not familiar with the Septuagint and its use of the Greek language. In fact the word "kyrios" is almost only used in the NT only when referring to Jesus or God. Another example would of course be the "brothers and sisters" of Jesus. The word used for these brothers of his in the New Testament is "adelphoi" which in the singular is "adelphos". In the Septuagint we find that Abraham's nephew is called his "adelphos" and other similar examples goes to show that the early church belief that these "brothers" were actually just kinsmen (not siblings) is backed up by this. We also know that the majority of Old Testament quotes in the New Testament are taken from the Septuagint. We also have older copies of Septuagint manuscripts than we have of the Hebrew Masoretic text which means that it is invaluable for the study of early Christianity. The reason I gave the book four and not five stars is because in a minority of places some letters don't seem to have printed properly. Instances of this are rare and rarely affected my ability to read the text though. The font could also have been slightly larger but I suppose that is the price of having both the Greek and English text included!

A very important book for anyone interested in the history of Judaism and Christianity. More than just a Greek translation of the Hebrew original, it was this version, rather than the Hebrew, on which the evangelists principally relied when putting the story of Jesus into its historical/religious context. The English translation, while accurate, is not modern - although written in the 19th Century, it has the flavour of King James rather than Queen Victoria. If you are comfortable with Greek, you'll easily write a better translation yourself. At this price, the book is terrific value.

Excellent and clear text. For anyone who is used, as I am, to reading the Greek New Testament this will not be difficult to wade through. Around 90% of NT Greek is in here also, plus other words which a good lexicon (like Taylor's) will help you find easily. Its not scripture as I understand it. The LXX adds and subtracts words and phrases, and takes some odd slants occasionally; more a Jewish commentary (like a modern English Bible translation wrt the Greek/Hebrew originals.) Excellent to have two columns of Greek and English side by side. The English is quite literal and readable, but suffers from some out-of-date terms and words, so do get a Lexicon to go with this.

A truly useful book for anyone interested in translating and studying the Septuagint. Easy to use and compact considering the amount of material it covers. Comes with an attractive and hardwearing binding. Would thoroughly recommend.

A beautifully bound edition with easily accessed comparisons from the koine Greek to English and vice versa. A must for serious students and researchers.

it came before the delivery date and i was suprised at how good it looked with the hardcover it took me a few weeks to open the plastic packaging and have a look inside. I forgot it had greek writing as well as the english translation beside it (and i don't read greek), and that it was in roman numerals and that it didn't have the book of enoch or the NT. Besides all of that, i love reading it and cross referencing the the KJV. At this point, it is priced the same as my KJV, and should be priced more with all that it's got in there.

Schön, dass jemand dieses Buch zusammengestellt hat (Gegenüberstellung der Septuaginta und einer englischen Übersetzung): Die eine Spalte enthält den Septuagintatext, die andere Spalte eine englische Übersetzung. Mit diesem Buch kann man auch ohne Hebräischkenntnisse und wegen der Unterstützung durch die englische Übersetzung in der Spalte daneben auch ohne all zu gute Altgriechischkenntnisse das alte Testament zwar nicht im Urtext, aber zumindest mit Urtext-Feeling lesen. Wobei das ein Understatement ist: Da das neue Testament auch altgriechisch ist, hilft dieses altgriechische alte Testament auf eine Art, die das hebräische alte Testament nicht überall leisten kann, dem Urtext der Bibel näher zu kommen. Ich glaube, ich musste lange nach etwas derartigem suchen. Schade, dass es das nicht auch auf deutsch (also natürlich septuagintagriechisch und deutsch) statt auf englisch gibt. Hat mir geholfen, in's Bibelgriechisch rein zu kommen und sowohl das alte als auch das neue Testament besser zu verstehen. Die Schrift der englischen Übersetzung ist ein bisschen klein, aber noch groß genug. Schade, dass die Gegenüberstellung Septuagintatext - englische Übersetzung nicht versweise ist, sondern seitenweise oder absatzweise.

Qualquer estudante das Escrituras sabe que a Septuaginta, além do texto hebraico, é uma excelente obra de pesquisa para compreensão da mensagem do Novo Testamento. Por isso é imprescindível ter um exemplar para consulta.
