The first and the best. Al Pacino is Michael Corleone. Born into a mafia family, he seeks only to be a good man...but soon, he is dragged into the 'family business' and behins his downward spiral. Intrigued, suspense and bloodshed make this one of the most iconic movies ever made.

I think everyone must have seen the godfather in their lifetime, its a classic film, not suitable for small children , I think it would give them nightmares. I think it must be the worlds best film, the stories within it are all intermingled, family groups, christenings, parties, gatherings, mafia all set within a closed group. Just watch it , you wont be disappointed.

Watched it 5th time. Very good movie.

This is of course a brilliant film and the cinematography is fantastic. But compared to what I recall of the original cinema release there are several scenes missing from this edition. This is unfortunate as the deleted scenes help flesh out the characters, although the story still broadly makes sense. But because of this dilution of the film's impact I feel it necessary to deduct a star.

I don't know how many times I've seen this film, I'm old enough to remember seeing it first upon its release. Its still just as good and the acting and production just as brilliant. If you want to know how difficult it was to make this film given the studio politics and the mafia, then I recommend seeing the TV series The Offer. It will make you appreciate how lucky we are to have it at all. Highly recommended.

I had never watched "The Godfather " before now, it was one of those films that had entered into the general population's consciousness through anecdotal tales , like the "horses head on the pillow." It had been so ingrained in the psyche as a "classic film that you have to watch", that this epithet put me off watching it. I guess I was just not interested in something that everyone found so engaging. However my interest piqued this when people in my circle began discussing it and I found I was unable to join in the conversation having never seen the film. I decided I should probably watch it after 30 odd years of refusing. I just wished I had watched it earlier. No the horses head is not on the pillow - spoiler alert. A film of bad people killing other bad people should not invoke sympathy, but Francis Ford Copolla has managed to tell of tale that is about family albeit a psychotic family and still make it seem like you should be rooting for them. The worse of two evils is the other Mob guys not this mob family! Watch it. You will be impressed. Al Pacino's acting was fantastic.

Francis Ford Coppola was seen as a representative of the new generation of Hollywood film - makers and the success of the film guaranteed not only his artistic future but also improved the prospects of his contemporaries. Although it was directed by a `new' film - maker, The Godfather is essentially a traditional film: the subject matter - the world of ethnic crime - is familiar and has provided the basis for many previous films; the main thrust is a narrative one, though ranging widely in time and space; the story is told vividly and clearly; the stars are a mixture of established faces, such as Marlon Brando and Sterling Hayden, and promising newcomers - Al Pacino, James Caan and Diane Keaton. Many critics and reviewers have said that The Godfather is a radical film. This is a difficult argument to sustain, for the points the film makes about the place of crime in American Society. The intimate connections with the established representatives of law and politics, its control over legitimate enterprises, the analogies that can be made between the way crime and large corporations conduct their affairs are all familiar ones, and hardly the marks of a radical view of American Society. If anything, the film, with its admiration for a certain ideal of masculine purity based on honor, the ruthlessness, the use of violence and the maintenance of the family, is reactionary in outlook.

This was given as a gift to my daughter and she loves the whole series.....

Amazing film. Great performances from the late great Marlon Brando as The Godfather and Al Pacino as Michael Corleone. Great story, great characters, great everything. A must watch.
