Shirley MacLaine and Nicolas Cage star in this cantankerous comedy about a former First Lady and her reluctant bodyguard. Review: LOVE THIS MOVIE - Shirley McLane and Nicholas Cage at their very best. Love this testy relationship that grows into something sweet. Review: This is a sweet, funny movie that we always watch at holiday gatherings - This is one of those movies that never fails to make you laugh and to shed a tear. It's all about the relationship between the Former First Lady Tess, played by Shirley MacLaine, and her secret service contingent, lead by Doug Chesny played by Nick Cage. She's fiesty, determined and cantankerous when she doesn't get her way and what she wants is to keep her Special Agent in Charge Doug at her side while he yearns to get back into the thick of being a Secret Service agent instead of living the life of a retiree. The secret behind her desire to hold onto Doug is *spoiler alert* the fact that he so loved Tess' late husband who died while still serving as President. He was loyal, protected his secrets and served him steadfastly and while Tess' own children were divorced from the normal family dynamic, she sees Doug as a surrogate son whom her late husband trusted implicitly and Doug is her last link to her late husband, who she still loves despite the fact that he died while entertaining another woman. The movie focuses on their relationship and the depth of care that they develop for each other while bad behavior and some dangerous twists occur, most of them leading to outright guffaws of laughter and some tears. It's one of those sweet movies that has so much going for it that if we don't have it out during our family gatherings for the holidays, people ask for it to be brought out and played. And, while there are a few moments of blue language, it's a great movie for kids as well as grown ups, an all around family classic.

Guarding Tess, Oh What a Journey!
This movie is so entertaining from the beginning to the well done ending. Both actors are tremendous in their roles and very believable as a woman who is used to getting her own way and the young man assigned to ensure her safety at all cost! There is laughter and poignant moments in this movie and can be enjoyed by all!

Wonderful movie! ESPECIALLY in WIDESCREEN...!!! WHY IN THE HELL do some of these producers only offer these movies in widescreen overseas, but not in the US?? This is FRIGGIN' B/S...!! NOBODY watches "full screen" anymore - nobody...!! But in several movies I've sought out on DVD recently, you can only get the "region 1" (US) over here, but the "PAL/Region 2" "over there" (in the UK). You'd think by now some idiot would say "HMMMMM...!!" and get with the program!! I've got to order this from a UK source and then pay $25 more dollars to have someone over here convert it to a "region 1" disc!! Yes, there are "region-free" DVD players, but that's one more piece of hard ware along with one more friggin' remote that we've gotta have on hand. I'd rather have a "region 1" disc, instead - the relatively few discs I've got that need to be converted from "PAL/Region 2" to "region 1" aren't that many. But still, you'd think these idiots would've learned by now...!!! :-(

Nicholas Cage and Shirley MacLaine are excellent playing off each other. MacLaine is a former first lady living now in a small town, she is guarded by a staff of FBI agents. They dislike the job intensely as she is very needy and her requests do not often play into their roles to protect her. Cage hates the job and wants to return to being a field agent. His requests are turned down by his boss because MacLaine wants him to protect her. The chief is played by an English actor who was a detective in Pie in the Sky who with his wife runs a restaurant. She is kidnapped and the protective agents are turned aside by the FBI who search for her. Excellent scene where Cage interogates the driver who is in hospital, all is well when they find her as she has been kept hostage in a pit covered by dirt. Oxygen running out. Highly recommended as Cage plays against his usual quirky roles. MacLaine is excellent as the demanding former first lady. Touching and humorous. Excellent film. Cage is also excellent as a soldier who has to protect a Navajo soldier, Navajos often sent messages in their native language to prevent the Germans from intercepting coded messages.
