Excellent sound quality...
It's small, compact, silver, and it's lovely! Very well featured with DAB/DAB+ radio, Bluetooth (at last!), and a very good quality, well performing CD player. It has decent connectivity with an analogue RCA Phono input, and two optical SPDIF inputs, a subwoofer output, and good, high quality loudspeaker binding posts. It goes FAR louder than you'd imagine from the modest spec, however, it's a big powerful and accurate loud, rather than a harsh and brash loud. The sound/tonal quality is easily adjusted from tone controls, bass-boost, and optimisation for Denon's own speakers; all done from the remote control, which is rather on the large side; a little bulky, however, it is well and logically laid out. It's Denon, so you expect a quality product, and this is just what you do get. Looks lovely, sounds excellent, and is easy to use. The Bluetooth works like a charm with my iPhone/iPad/MacBook Pro, and the optical inputs are very fast, and when one is connected to an optical-out on a TV, there's no discernible audio-lag - which is nice - and the DAC behind it sounds excellent when playing movies or CDs from UHD Sony Blu-ray player.... The analogue input works perfectly well if connected to a CD player (with no digital outputs), cassette deck, or turntable/phono preamp, and the DAB radio has very strong reception, even just using the supplied wire ribbon aerial. So overall, if you're looking for a high quality all-in-one small form-factor Hi-Fi system at a decent price, and which sounds Very high quality, then what are you waiting for? Just buy one of these..... :-)

Highly recommend
Great bit of kit. Paired with Wharfedale 9.1 speakers. Now playing songs from my youth that sound so clear and crisp as I remember them originally. Would recommend highly. Bluetooth set up: For Bluetooth pairing hold the Bluetooth button for 3 seconds, Pairing appears on screen. Set your device settings to Denon. To switch off Bluetooth, hold Bluetooth button for 8 seconds. When it shows connecting it’s looking for the last connected device. All ok now it’s sorted. Brilliant!

No out of the box bluetooth lossless audio
Some things to bear in mind. This DENON by default is set to automatically optimize sound output to their own kind of speakers. You should probably disable that in settings, if you’ll be connecting third-party speakers. Secondly, if you think you’ll be able to play Apple’s lossless music via Bluetooth 4.0 (current built-in version) without additional equipment you’ll be disappointed. This version can transmit up to 1Mbit/s, which is insufficient, and your audio will be choppy. Disabling lossless audio helps a bit, but in my experience still produced sound gaps, from time to time. Luckily there’s a solution! All you need is a Bluetooth 5.* receiver, which have much better bandwidth and are relatively inexpensive. Just make sure that your phone/tablet is compatible. Build quality is excellent, mine is a shiny metallic one. Finally, the sound quality is more than good enough at higher volume. However, my speakers are a pair of quite old Q-acoustic, and they perform well, but can handle more than twice the power of this receiver and my living room is fairly spacious. I’m considering purchasing a subwoofer. I could live without it, but it wouldn’t hurt to add some extra kick.

Denon’s speciality
Bought the M41 as a replacement for my old M38 not because the old one of many years failed but because I wanted Bluetooth and optical input. The new unit has the benefit of several generations over my old one (which is still very good at what it does). Clear improvement besides the Bluetooth and optical input is that you can control the volume to a much finer level. The old one had that annoying issue of one setting being slightly too loud and the one below slightly too quiet, this new one is much better in this regard. It’s also much better at having equal volume in both speakers at lower volume level which some amps can suffer from. I am not using the recommended Denon speakers currently so I can’t comment on those but it drives my existing ones with no issue and sounds head and shoulders above smart speakers in terms of clarity. I think I prefer the design too to the old one as it’s less cluttered, although I miss the usb socket as this allowed people to easily swap music between phones at parties. The Bluetooth however works seamlessly so in reality not much need for it anymore. In addition the back of the unit is less cluttered too combining things like Ariel outputs. Summary: a great little unit that does everything you’d need it too from a company that specialises in this sort of thing. What’s not to like?

Great Tuner
Very nice audio tuner. The optical audio sockets allowed me to connect my Samsung TV and Virgin box. The supplied DAB aerial only allowed me to tune to one station but once i connected to my loft aerial the problem was sorted. Bluetooth connectivity is very handy. I am very pleased with the purchase.

CD Player Erratically Faulty
I’ve had this Denon for over a year now and while the sound quality is good it has a very irritating fault. About 20% of the time a CD will refuse to play and a message ‘unsupported’ appears on the display. Happens totally at random, a CD will play one day and not the next, sometimes it will refuse to play any. I took the matter up with Denon who told me to clean the player which I did to no effect. Their next suggestion was that I take it to an authorised dealer for repair under warranty. Given that this would have taken me two days (deliver & collect), with the concurrent loss of wages or a least expensive postage and packing I didn’t bother and would advise you not to bother with Denon. Sound might be good but once they’ve sold you the kit that’s it…
