I’d like to address two things regarding sour sop/graviola that I’m seeing posted in reviews. For those who are concerned that this and other herbs aren’t FDA approved, I want to explain in a nutshell why companies are not going to bother seeking FDA approval for herbs. A pharmaceutical product must be approved as a “drug” by the FDA in order to be able to specify its medicinal benefit. This process takes years as well as many millions of dollars to prove to FDA that it’s safe and effective. There is no financial incentive for a pharmaceutical company to go through this process for an herb that can’t be patented, and can often be easily grown. And as is mentioned by several people in other reviews here, for many years they’ve eaten the sour sop fruit or made tea with the leaves with no ill effects. In my opinion, it’s a scare tactic to say that sour sop/graviola has neurotoxins. Apples have cyanide…in the seeds…but you’d have to chew a whole lot of them to get sick. But no one will tell you not to eat an apple. So I would encourage you to do your own research and not get scared off by questionable reports.
