Review: The definitive, Apple-recommended choice for reliable, stress-free Time Machine backups - Many modern Mac users assume that they must spend a fortune on high-speed portable SSDs for simple system backups, or they resort to cheap USB thumb drives as a budget compromise. This traditional, spinning mechanical drive completely proves both of those approaches wrong. It delivers whisper-quiet, consistent performance in a surprisingly compact form factor that bypasses the high costs of solid-state storage without sacrificing data integrity. If you are looking for a straightforward, plug-and-play solution to safeguard your Mac's data, this drive hits the absolute sweet spot for reliability. The Bottom Line Should you buy it? Yes. It offers outstanding value and the precise, consistent read/write reliability required for long-term backup duties. Who This Is For vs. Who Should Skip Who This Is For: Mac users requiring a dedicated, durable Time Machine drive that handles regular, high-volume background writes without burning out or stalling. Who Should Skip: Creative professionals who need a lightning-fast drive for live 4K video editing directly from the external volume. The Real-World Test I integrated this drive into my desktop system specifically to serve as a dedicated macOS Time Machine volume, completely replacing a generic 1TB USB stick that had rapidly degraded under the intense pressure of daily backup writes. Setting up the drive was a flawless, true plug-and-play experience; it initialised immediately and began silent background operations without any configuration friction. Having previously invested a significant premium in a LaCie SSD for backup duties on another machine, seeing the swift and completely silent real-world performance of this mechanical version proves that the expensive solid-state option was an entirely unnecessary luxury for standard backup tasks. Quick Scan Scorecard Setup Simplicity: 5/5 – Absolute zero-friction installation; instantly recognised and configured by MacOS. Operational Noise: 5/5 – Whisper-quiet mechanical platter movement that is virtually imperceptible on a desk. Form Factor Design: 5/5 – Notably neat and compact; the iconic protective casing is highly streamlined rather than clunky. Write Durability: 5/5 – Easily handles continuous hourly Time Machine delta updates without a single drop-out. The Pro-Level Detail The reason Apple continues to officially recommend this specific mechanical drive configuration for Time Machine lies directly within the flash memory architecture of modern USB sticks versus traditional spinning platters. Budget flash drives utilise cheap, low-end controllers that suffer severe thermal throttling and permanent cell degradation when subjected to the frequent, sustained small-file write cycles that Time Machine relies on to map system changes. This drive employs a highly stable internal disk structure that handles deep, persistent sector writes indefinitely, ensuring your backup archive won't unexpectedly corrupt when you actually need to restore your system. Technical Note The drive comes packaged with a native USB-C connection cable in the box, ensuring seamless integration with modern Mac hardware out of the box without the need for unappealing legacy adapters or third-party splitters. Review: Great rugged drive at a bargain price! - I bought two of these, both 2TB, for use as backup drives for my main PC. So far I'm pretty impressed! Just for clarity - these are mechanical hard disk drives (HDD) as opposed to solid state drives (SSD). LaCie sell both versions in the Rugged mini range, but the 2TB SSD versions are considerably more expensive. For my needs, i.e. a long term back-up that will sit in a drawer, the HDD version was the best option. The drives are shock resistant, pressure resistant and rain resistant, coming with the distinctive orange bumper case. They are small is size and look smart with the silver/orange colour combo. These are great drives for throwing in your backpack (not that I'll be doing much of that). The drives comes with a connecting cable - in this case a USB 3.0 Micro-B (on the HDD) going to a USB-C on the PC. OK, I'd have preferred USB-C at each end, but no big deal. There's a distinctive LED light on the drive when it's running, so no issue of accidentally unplugging whilst the PC is accessing it. The drives come formatted as exFAT (readable by PC and MAC). They have installed software that allows you to easily register the drive with LaCie (actually Seagate who own LaCie). They come with a generous 3 year warranty and data recovery. I reformatted my drives to NTFS as I'm using them exclusively on PCs. I haven't done any geeky measures of speed - but would say they seem plenty fast to me! Final thought - the price for these seems to be very variable with desertcart. I've seen them advertised for around £90, then seen other listings with lower prices. Be assured, these came brand new, unopened, with cable and a full 3-year warranty direct from desertcart - don't hesitate to buy one is you see it in the £50 - £70 ball park. ## Features - Cost-effective portable storage upgrade for computers - Features an elegant shape that makes it ergonomic - Borders are rugged and can resist crush against a 1 ton car - Dust and water resistant and can withstand impacts from 4 feet high - Light weight and convenient to carry around wherever you go ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B0058VIWTM | | Best Sellers Rank | 201 in Computers & Accessories ( See Top 100 in Computers & Accessories ) 4 in External Hard Drives | | Box Contents | RUGGED MINI 1TB, USB cable, The actual capacity may vary. | | Brand Name | LaCie | | Cache Memory Installed Size | 1 | | Color | Black | | Compatible Devices | Computer, Game Console | | Compatible Video Game Console Models | Sony PlayStation 5 | | Country of Origin | Thailand | | Customer Package Type | Standard Packaging | | Customer Reviews | 4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars (23,532) | | Data Transfer Rate | 130 Megabytes Per Second | | Digital Storage Capacity | 1000 GB | | EU Spare Part Availability Duration | 2 Years | | Enclosure Material | Robust | | Form Factor | 2.5-inch | | Global Trade Identification Number | 00093053827984, 03660619315581, 04828591486746 | | Hard Disk Description | Mechanical Hard Disk | | Hard Disk Form Factor | 2.5 Inches | | Hard Disk Interface | USB 3.0 | | Hard Disk Rotational Speed | 5400 RPM | | Hard-Drive Size | 1 TB | | Hardware Connectivity | USB 3.0 | | Hardware Platform | PC;Mac | | Installation Type | External Hard Drive | | Item Dimensions L x W x Thickness | 13.5L x 8.6W x 2.6Th centimetres | | Item Length | 13.46 Centimetres | | Item Type Name | 1TB Dust and Water Resistant Mini External Hard Disk Drive | | Item Weight | 280 Grams | | Item Width | 8.6 Centimetres | | Manufacturer | Seagate Technology LLC | | Manufacturer Part Number | LAC301558 | | Media Speed | 130 megabytes_per_second | | Model Name | Rugged Mini 1 TB | | Model Number | LAC301558 | | Network Connectivity Technology | USB | | Number of Items | 1 | | Product Features | Portable | | Product Warranty | 3 year manufacturer | | Read Speed | 130 Megabytes Per Second | | Specific Uses For Product | Personal | | Unit Count | 1.0 count | ## Product Details - **Brand:** LaCie - **Colour:** Black - **Compatible devices:** Computer, Game Console - **Connectivity technology:** USB - **Digital storage capacity:** 1000 GB - **Hard disk description:** Mechanical Hard Disk - **Hard disk form factor:** 2.5 Inches - **Hard disk interface:** USB 3.0 - **Installation type:** External Hard Drive - **Special feature:** Portable ## Images ![LAC301558 1 TB Dust and Water Resistant Mini External Hard Disk Drive - Grey /Orange - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61VGbBYeV2L.jpg) ![LAC301558 1 TB Dust and Water Resistant Mini External Hard Disk Drive - Grey /Orange - Image 2](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81+p-QvqCnL.jpg) ![LAC301558 1 TB Dust and Water Resistant Mini External Hard Disk Drive - Grey /Orange - Image 3](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/61YE2wVLtKL.jpg) ![LAC301558 1 TB Dust and Water Resistant Mini External Hard Disk Drive - Grey /Orange - Image 4](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71rv4YQLbsL.jpg) ![LAC301558 1 TB Dust and Water Resistant Mini External Hard Disk Drive - Grey /Orange - Image 5](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81me1DtwxwL.jpg) ## Available Options This product comes in different **Size, Style** options. ## Questions & Answers **Q: Product describes 5tb drive with usb-c connector, but illustration shows thunderbolt version.** A: Correct. Wrong pictures. I purchased this and it is in fact a 5TB USB-C drive. The USB-C lead is not attached like the older drives but is supplied. **Q: Is the 4TB model 7200rpm?** A: no it's 5400rpm. only the 500GB is 7200rpm. if you need a faster unit you could get the more expensive rugged RAID. **Q: Is it compatible with OSX10.4?** A: Hi, if you have USB interface, it is compatible **Q: Will this work on iPhone 13 pro** A: No idea, but I wouldn't bother with this product. Mine stopped working after a month, and then got lost when sended for repair. In the end it took 4 months to resolve the situation, and I never got my data back, just the price of the drive was reibursed. Never again. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The definitive, Apple-recommended choice for reliable, stress-free Time Machine backups *by S***R on 27 June 2026* Many modern Mac users assume that they must spend a fortune on high-speed portable SSDs for simple system backups, or they resort to cheap USB thumb drives as a budget compromise. It’s easy to use, lightweight and like my previous cheaper model (which started making clicking noises) it’s very quiet and does sound like a plane taking off. ## Frequently Bought Together - LaCie USB 3.0 1TB Rugged Mini Hard Drive - Case Compatible with LaCie Rugged Mini 1TB/ 2TB/ 4TB/ 5TB External Hard Drive Portable HDD, Storage Holder for Hard Drives for Mac and PC Computer & USB 3.0 2.0 Cable SD Cards (Orange) - CableCreation 1FT USB C to Micro B Cable,10Gbps Speed External Hard Drive Braided,USB 3.1 Type C to Micro B Work for iPhone 15,16,Seagate WD Westgate My Passport,MacBook Pro/Air, iPad/Tablet,Black --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - 🛒 **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** — Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** — Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - 💰 **No Hidden Fees** — All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - 🔄 **15-Day Free Returns** — Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - 🔒 **Secure Payments** — Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** — Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.is/products/48744638-lac301558-1-tb-dust-and-water-resistant-mini-external-hard](https://www.desertcart.is/products/48744638-lac301558-1-tb-dust-and-water-resistant-mini-external-hard) --- *Product available on Desertcart Iceland* *Store origin: IS* *Last updated: 2026-10-19*
