works like a charm
I wanted to digitise some old vhs tapes of the family and kids and so I bought a generic EasyCap type device. This wasn't very successful - I had driver problems and ended up with poor quality video and no audio. I decided to spend a little more and purchased the ClimaxDigital VCAP 303. What a difference! The drivers installed without fuss. I didn't bother with the bundled editing software and used my own copy of Ulead Video studio 11 instead as this is what I am used to using. The capture device was detected without problem in VideoStudio. I have now converted several of my old home movie VHS tapes using the VCAP303 on my core i7 laptop running Windows 8.1. I have not experienced any dropped frames and the quality of the conversion is very good. If you want to convert your old vhs tapes to digital don't bother with cheap generic devices- spend a little more on the VCAP303 and you won't be disappointed.

EzCap - Worth The Money
I wanted to convert all my old camcorder tapes onto DVD and before buying EzCap, I had a look at the reviews for similar products. Most of them seemed to have more bad reviews than good. I purchased the EzCap on the basis that most of the nine reviews given to the product were good. The EzCap was used with three different types of tape format and produced good results with minimum effort. It was just a case of wire everything together and start recording. Both picture and sound quality were good with no need to mess around with the default settings. Had some problem with capturing the sound, which was fixed by turning the computer off and on. However not sure it this was a problem with the device or the computer. Did not have much success with old VHS tapes, as the recorded picture quality was poor. With regard to the ArcSoft Showbiz software that was supplied, I can't recommend this as I found it un-useable as it kept closing down and saying that my camcorder tapes were copyright protected? Instead I used Corel VideoStudio X2 Pro and found it very quick and easy to use with no problems. The range of effects was more than enough for want I wanted to do. The EzCap is a good device and does what it is meant to do. For the best results I would recommend that you invest in some decent software.

Ideal for converting analogue video to digital
I've had the EasyCAP now for several weeks, which has given me time to really use it to copy several hours worth of family analogue video to digital and then burn onto DVD. I've used both the EasyCAP and the software that comes with it both of which have been excellent and reliable. I thought long and hard about buying this product rather than something more expensive given the mixed reviews. However provide that your computer is capable of processing the video stream, you should have no problems. I have a 1GB 3.5GHz Athlon 64 bit computer with about 80GB free on the hard drive. I would imagine that if your hard drive is getting full then storing the temporary files during DVD burning might be a problem. I shut down any background programs (such as Microsoft Office toolbar) during capture and leave as much of the RAM free as possible to handle the load. Technical support are very good. During installation I forgot to restart my computer and got an 'already reistered' flag when I tried to run it. My query email was answered within a couple of hours (this was on a weekend). Technical support not only contacted the software suppliers and verified the authenticity of the serial number but correctly suggected the remedy (Remove then reinstall). All in all I'm highly satisfied and have recommended EasyCAP to friends.

Disappointed
I bought this to copy my VHS taped copies of holiday and family camcorder footage to DVD,to save storage space and lose my VHS player. I had trouble to start with because my computer rejected the the software disc but the supplier gave me web site links for it and I downloaded the drivers and the Arcsoft programme successfully. I had additional leads which enabled me to connect the scart on my little used Sony VHS player to the capture device and started copying a tape, but after 10 or 15 minutes it stopped working with the message that my tape was copyright protected. This kept happening and when I tried another tape it was worse, stopping within a minute every time. I did get about 15 minutes of my first tape onto DVD and the quality was good, confirming some of the positive reviews I had read. I emailed ClimaxDigital and they said that some customers had solved this problem with alternative free to download software, Deput, VirtualDub or AMCAP. I have tried all three with varying success but none of them produced an acceptable quality on disc. I have given it 3 stars because the capture device does work but there are software issues.

Problems with sound on three PCs I tried
I tried this on two laptops running Windows XP (one a 3GHz Celeron, the other a 1.3Ghz Celeron M, both with plenty of RAM) and had serious problems with sound recording on both of them. The video recorded perfectly (very impressive, in fact), but the sound had so many drop-outs (fraction of a second silences), plus occasional pops and crackles, that the recordings were unuseable. The device itself seemed OK (I was able to record audio from it using other programs) - it was the ArcSoft 'ShowBiz' capture program, which actually compresses the video and sound into MPEG files, that didn't seem able to keep up. Doing anything else while recording (such as clicking on My Computer) created dropouts to order, so it looked like a performance problem. However changing the program priority to 'real time', disabling wireless, anti-virus etc and running nothing else alongside it still didn't solve it. ClimaxDigital, who were very helpful, said to check that the correct audio driver had been installed. It hadn't, but when I installed it (replacing the generic Microsoft one) it made things worse. In fairness it's asking a lot of any 'ordinary' computer to compress video and audio together in real time, and although the Celerons on these two machines should match the stated minimum of a 1.7Ghz P4, they might be borderline. However I also tried it on a newer Vista laptop with a 2.0GHz Core Duo processor and 3GB RAM, which is way ahead of the minimum spec, and while it worked OK the first couple of times (oddly, there were audible crackles during recording, but not on the recorded MPG file), after a few more tests dropouts began to appear in the sound recording, quite badly in one case. On the faster of the two XP laptops ShowBiz also had problems recognising the video stream, indicating compatibility problems. The program also has an audio-only recording feature, but this didn't work on any of the three machines I tried. Overall the ezCap seems a functional piece of hardware let down by poor-quality, ill-matched software (not an unknown situation with kit like this). My feeling is that if it works for you then you've got a real bargain, but you are taking pot luck with it - and you'll definitely need way more than a 1.7GHz Pentium 4 to run ShowBiz successfully. After failing to get reliable results on three different machines, I've sent mine back.

Excellent Video Capturing Device
Having decided to get rid of our many VHS tapes, I decided to buy this device to capture the video data from our VCR. The only problem I had was installing the supplied Arcsoft ShowBiz software: the supplied intallation code was printed using a dot matrix printer and the letter 'u' was printed like a 'v.' After realising this, I followed the supplied instructions to install the driver and set up the device to work on a Windows 7 64-bit computer without any problems. I was very happy with the resulting digitised data. The quality is excellent. Whilst the supplied Arcsoft Showbiz software adequately deals with the video capturing process, I could not discover how to use it to burn a DVD. The supplied instructions do not cover DVD burning, and there is no manual available on the internet about this software. Normally, I use Nero to burn a DVD; however, my version does not handle the MPEG file (*.mpg), produced by the VCAP 303 device. Fortunately, I was able to use the Windows DVD Maker program, supplied with Windows 7. Able to handle MPEG files, this program is very easy to use, and allows DVDs to be produced with a menu and accompanying music, Overall, I am very happy with the VCAP 303 device.

Just will not work
I bought this because I have a new Sony all in one computer that doesn't have a composite ports like my older Sony all in one. Just wanted to be able to capture VCR/DVD player output and use it on my Pinnacle Studio Ultimate. My new computer is running windows 7 64 bit. It is claimed this product can accomadate windows 7, not without reconfiguring and using their capture software. I suppose I have spent some four hours and several emails trying to get this to work. First it would not recognise my camera, got over that problem. Then it would capture DVD/VCR but without sound. The email told me to download the windows 7 64bit driver (should already be there) I followed all the instructions including trying all my USB ports and all i could get after making changes in the Device manager was capture but this time with a whistle feedback. I truly cannot waste any more of my time on this ClimaxDigital VCAP301 USB 2.0 VHS to DVD Converter/DVD Maker-easy way to convert and edit your VHS video Tapes to quality DVD. Works but only once you know what your doing - Tutorial
4 stars because the hardware itself it's good but your paying for very poor software. I bought this to record off my xbox despite the mixed reviews and spent a whole day getting the damn thing to work, here is what I came up with: The software that comes with the cap card simply doesn't work, I would recommend downloading corel video studio 12/13 - you get a 30 day trial so you can keep installing and re-installing unless you want to buy it. If you are using red blue and green connectors from your xbox to your tv, plug them in. MAKE SURE THE SWITCH ON THE XBOX CABLE (near the socket) IS SET TO STANDARD, NOT HD. This is because the card won't record in hd. connect the red yellow and white cables (from your xbox) to your capture card and plug it into your computer. load up video studio 12 or which ever version you have, click movie wizard then capture, now click options video properties and select the following: input source: composite (the red blue and green cables - im not sure how to set it up without them ie scart or hdmi) TV system: NTSC_433 - this seems to be the only option that records both sound and colour in pal 60hz, any other setting doesn't seem to work. (for best quality go to template and select the profile name DVD NTSC HQ 16_9) hit ok and turn on your xbox. The only thing I have noticed is that there is a sound delay when recording - this doesn't affect the final video but its a bit odd. Edit: I have fixed the sound problem, it requires 2 audio splitters and one male audio to audio cable (red and white on both ends) You need to plus the two splitters into the red and white connections on the ezcap, then plug the red cable from your xbox into one end of the red splitter and the same on the other splitter but with the white cable. this provides audio for the ezcap. Now plug the 3rd connection from your audio cable into the free splitter ports (again corresponding to colour) on the other end of the cable, plug the red and white connectors into the red and white ports on the back of your tv (or speaker setup) this will then provide the ez cap with audio but you will still be able to hear the sound through your speakers without lag, it all turns out ok in the final video too. for making the best quality videos search on youtube for tutorials on how to render videos. These are the setting I use which work and I hope this helps other people. any questions just send me a message Edit: broke after a few months, sound became patchy and video skipped, tried to get a replacement which turned out to be complicated so in the end I got a refund, now I just have to buy another one ยฌ_ยฌ
