Vinyl re-issue review
Excellent quality vinyl pressing. Usually re-issues are either poorly done, or they sound really bad in comparision to the original presses. Not in this case. The sound is vibrant, lively and well cut and pressed. If memory serves me well, the original Factory issue of this was just a single disc. This is a double album that includes all of the tracks that where on the cassette version at the time. Highly recommended. More than a compilation, it is required to sit next to Unknown Pleasures and Closer in your collection.

Completing the collection
I've recently refurbished and started using again a record deck that I purchased in the 1980s but haven't really used for quite a long time. Whilst I have on the various Joy Division and Warsaw recordings on CD I thought I'd get my first Joy Division vinyl since 1980 by getting Unknown Pleasures. The vinyl difference was, to me and on my system, immediate. This pressing of Substance has not disappointed. In common with most new vinyl recordings these days, static levels are high when new. It isn't audible on this recording, just lifts off the platter mat ...

3-5-0-1-2-5...don't bother (with the CD version of this re-issue)
This Substance re-issue project was done overall, I suspect, mainly with vinyl buyers in mind - and I note the Amazon reviewers of the vinyl presently appear satisfied with their purchase. The CD format, although it does have two bonus tracks not included on the original CD, "As You Said" and the Pennine version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (always, marginally, my favourite that version by the way), is a different story. Presented in a flimsy jewel case with flimsy and poorly printed inlays - a digipack would have been so much nicer - this is a "why bother" affair that serves generally only to accelerate the demise of the hard-copy. Whilst you can't fault the track list (obviously), presentationally this is not a must have re-release (sadly). If you are buying "Substance" for the first time though, then make sure you buy this one for the extra tracks - which overall are an improvement on previous CD editions. For existing owners, download or stream the bonus tracks if you don't already have them, as it's not worth a re-purchase (or buy/investigate the vinyl, which I don't have but looks a decent buy going by the reviews AND has the same tracklisting). A missed opportunity for Joy Division Substance re-issue on CD.

A good snapshot of an interesting body of work.
Vinyl reissue: Nicely finished and presented. Audio is good for a compilation. The music is a mixed bag, but always interesting. Atmosphere, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Transmission and She's Lost Control are for me the stand out tracks. Worth it for those tracks alone. I have the vinyl reissue of Unknown Pleasures; the audio is marginally better on that release.

A Perfect Reissue!
Both "Substance" and "Still" sound really great and these reissues are really worth every penny. Download codes are OK but if you're an old-fashioned sentimental idiot like me you'll dust your old deck and tape the stuff onto, say, TDK SA tape to get proper historically informed performance. Not joking, I really did it. Anyway, the records are clean, flat and sound absolutely stunning. Recommended!!!!
