how comfortable are these pedals durring non clip in ride??

You could be ride without cleats, but it is not ideal. I rode without cleats 2 times, about 3 hours each time. In flat rides its ok, but in country tracks and downing stairs you can feel uncomfortable the springs of the cleats pushing in the foot

In the pictures the red ones are the old version without the black pads and the black ones the new ones with the black pads. The black, have the pads?

Can these be used with flats? It's not clear if this item supports dual action. I'd like to be able to unclip on sketchy sections of DH.

By Flats do you mean flat soled DH shoes? The pedals are for clipless shoes and work exceptionally well either clipped in or out. Due to the wide surface area if you unclip you can contact the pedal easily with your foot and throw in some pedal strokes before you clip in again. . I run them wearing a pair of Five Ten Impact VXi shoes and they are awesome. The cleat system is designed so you can enter the clip at any angle, versus say Shimano where you have to clip from the back of the pedal moving your foot forward. These you just stomp down on after unclipping and they hook up. You also have the option of what angle of release you want your foot at before your shoe disengages the pedal (15 degree for early release, 20 degree for later release) based on which shoe you install the cleats that accompany the pedals. I use 15 degrees and sounds like you would be the same if you are focusing on DH. Also, the pins are obviously adjustable so screw them well in if you want to be able to move your foot around on the pedal whilst clipped in, or leave more length to keep the foot straighter. Again, I run them with not much thread showing above the surface of the pedal as I prefer to move my foot around in the cleat. But don't take my word for it, they are claimed to be the most raced pedal on the world cup DH circuit and are used by the likes of Greg Minaar, Steve Peat, Rachael Atherton etc.
