Figure Drawing for Artists: Making Every Mark Count (1) : Huston, Steve: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: A real masterclass - I have so many books on life and figure drawing that it looks like an obsession! This wonderful book by Steve Huston measures roughly 22 x 25 cm and contains 192 pages. Huston is a consummate draughtsman and his drawings are exquisite. Like many books there’s an emphasis on the basics – anatomy, perspective, light, gesture etc. The sequence is logical and his method of drawing superb. There are lots of exercises in the book and reference to old master drawings to demonstrate certain points. The final section in the book is called “Five Minutes” and refers to a daily practice routine. Huston points out that the artist Anders Zorn practiced for 12 hours a day, but that is impossible for most people so just try and do five minutes. It’s good advice! Review: Easy to read and understand on life drawing - I am self studying life drawing at the moment and this book has a lot of helpful information. It happens to fit with the way I want to draw figures, as there is more than just one way to go about it.

A "must have" for figure drawing
This is a well written, generous and wonderful book. Steve has a down to earth delivery with beautiful clarity and an humour that reverberates throughout. His methods, drawing on the practices of the old masters are explained and demonstrated with great expertise. A must have for anyone aspiring to drawing the human figure.

Steve Huston, wonderful artist, fair book, hope there might be a more advanced follow up
This is in a different league from just about every other Art Tuition book. The author is not a journeyman but produces some of the best drawings you are likely to find using tone to describe the figure. This is also the frustration of this book, most of its contents start from the absolute basics of figure drawing - building shapes up from primitives which you could find in many starter anatomy or cartoon books. It is fascinating to see his slant on what is important, and his choices of exercises and other artists drawings as pointers, but where he could have produced masterclasses on use of light and dark in drawings sadly he does not teach with his own personal strengths here

A Decent Foundation
A good starter book for students or a self-learner who wants to learn figure/life drawing. It covers a lot of ground and gives exercises that will cement certain key ideas. Steve Hudson's writing style is also very readable and you can dip into this without being too bogged down in overly elaborate language - something that some learning material in this field fall into all too readily. The only down side to this accessibility is that it's a little light on detail and explanation at times, and could do with more relevant illustrations or diagrams in places as well. I would still recommend this if you have a more thorough book along side it however. This is a decent companion book for something larger with more diagrams and technical detail. My personal recommendation for that would be Complete Guide to Life Drawing You can probably bump this up to 4 stars if bought with something more detailed. It's definitely a good choice for someone who's never touched the subject before or a student.

This guy truly knows his stuff. I like his way of teaching in video and in person, theres eloquence in his teachings and this book is no different. This book paired with an understanding of anatomy is best. If one has seen Steve Hustons videos or one on one workshops one can immediately see bis draftsmanship on this difficult journey of figure drawing. I had the pleasure of seeing a one day workshop of Steve's and one needs to understand he can't explain every detail of figure drawing he doesnt have time to explain everything you need to know. It's like having JK Rowling read the whole harry potter in one day. What Mr. Huston provides in this book is a starting point for many artists, which i wish I had when I started, and a different angle on figure drawing. I have two anatomy books to help with anatomy so suggest you do the same. If you bought this book is because you still need help, and I beleive gesture amd proportion is mostly everyones weakness well if you truly take the time to use this book you will get better, or atleast making ever mark count.

Very helpful in drawing anatomy. The artist has simple language and gives a lot of examples. I’ve been very happy to learn his method.
