Review: WOW!!! Amazing sound and very comfortable. - Finally, I have found headphones that sound great and feel comfortable. I've bought many different headphones over the past two years, trying to find a pair that don't feel uncomfortable after 30 minutes of continuous listening. Below are two recently purchased headphones I own: Sennheiser PX200: They didn't give their full potential because they sit too light on my ear. They do sound great if you push them close to your ear though. Sony MDR-V300: Sound good with lots of bass, but sometimes I feel like I'm listening to music through a wall and they feel uncomfortable after a 30 mins. For the cheap price they're good. The Koss Porta Pro Stereophones are mind blowing. I really can't express enough in words how good these are and they sound even better now I've run them in. The sound is outstanding with superb clarity and bass. I personally don't think the bass is over done at all, it sounds well balanced. I mainly listen to Progressive, Uplifting, Melodic Trance, for example: Puma White - Copenhagen (Original mix) & Mike Foyle vs. Signalrunners - Love Theme Dusk. These headphones sound great with other genres too and really bring the music alive. The Porta Pro's sound magnificent when used with a computer installed with a decent sound card, but they also sound great with MP3 players. I use these with my Creative Zen Touch and they are far better than the supplied in-ear headphones. These headphones look very retro cool and in my opinion they are very cool indeed. They are the most comfortable headphones I have ever worn (I've had them on for 3 hours and I'm feeling no ear discomfort at all) and I guess thats why the design has never changed since 1984. They look quite fragile at first but they are actually pretty sturdy. The Porta Pro's fold to fit in a small pouch embossed with KOSS which looks rather nice along with a 6.3mm Gold Plated Adapter which is a handy extra. Overall, If your looking for awesome quality and great value portable headphones that sound absolutely fantastic and feel great whether you're travelling, at work or chillin' at home then look no further than the Koss Porta Pro Stereophones. ★ UPDATE August 2013 ★ I've been meaning to update my review for the last few years and finally here it is. I must have about 5 pairs of these floating around now, along with my preciously preserved KOSS Porta Pro 25th Anniversary edition set stored safely in a secret underground bomb proof safe. I've accumulated quite a large collection of different headphones over the years and have reviewed a few here on desertcart. I no longer use the PortaPro everyday as my main home listening headphone, but they still accompany me on trips abroad, because they're great for the beach, as the unique comfort setting helps alleviate any ear pressure and discomfort caused by sand and seawater, and also allowing me to wear sunglasses comfortably. These are not great for commuting because of their open backed design. For home listening, I decided it was time to move up to some Sennheiser HD650's powered by a Graham Slee SOLO SRGII amp, which is quite a big jump, but they are the perfect headphone for home listening, offering superior quality sound matched with supreme comfort. Obviously, the Porta Pro can't compete with the HD650's, but they have a similar balanced and neutral sound signature which I always desire in headphones. My other recommended headphones, are the well reviewed and great sounding Audio Technica ATH-M50, which I mostly use for travelling. UPDATE Oct 2013: I'm now using the superb sounding Noontec Zoro as my portable headphone of choice, as the M50's are a little bulky for travelling. UPDATE August 2014: I'm now using the superb V-MODA XS. These are amazing! One important omission from my original review is the eventual occurrence of rattling emitting from the drivers (know as Grattle). This is caused by hair becoming trapped in the driver, which then produces annoying rattling sounds. To fix this, you'll need to take off the ear pad, then pop off the plastic driver cover (this is quite hard to do, but be persistent, as the PortaPro are very robust) and then use a rocket blower to remove the hair, you can also use a cloth or soft brush (like a Lenspen brush) if necessary, but be careful not to damage the driver. Even after seven years, the KOSS Porta Pro sit graciously on my headphone wall of fame and I can continue to highly recommend them for those looking for the best sounding, most comfortable and great value ultra-portable headphone money can buy.
Review: Easily worth the money for such good sound quality - These headphones are amazing for the price. They are absolutely worth the money, and are as good as headphones that are much more expensive. Don't believe me? Compare the waterfall charts for these drivers http://i.imgur.com/KlhKs.jpg to a pair worth ~£600 http://i.imgur.com/6tawl.jpg These show that the drivers in these headphones have a response time almost twice as fast as ones worth 20x the price. So let's have a look at the pros and cons. Pros: - A superb price-to-sound ratio, better than any others I've EVER seen. So cheap for such amazing drivers. These drivers haven't been changed since 1985, which is completely mental. - Pretty comfortable, more comfortable than a lot of over-ear headphones. - Loud, as they're quite low impedance which is awesome. - They fold up to be extremely tiny. I can easily fit them into the palm of my hand when folded up. - Lifetime warranty. Cons: - Questionable build quality, not sure how long these will last. The cables are very light and flexible but not in a good way. - The little bag that comes with it does not fit the headphones at all!!! Not even slightly, I managed to get them in once but I was scared that they were gonna break when pulling them out...It's kind of strange as it's awesome that they included a bag, but why would they not properly check that they really fit? I don't really understand why they wouldn't check that, just something to be aware of. - If you have long hair it can easily get trapped in the metal band. Conclusion: Just from the sound for the price, I give them five stars just for that and easily recommend them. They are so cheap for what you get, I've never seen headphones that are such good value for money. There are no real competitors except for the Koss KSC75, which are cheaper and have the same drivers.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: In the box is says Lifetime warrenty, is that correct?**
A: In the UK the lifetime warranty is honoured by Hama UK. You need to return the item at your own cost and pay £5 for return postage and handling. I just returned my headphones for the second time in 9 years - first time the plug became temperamental and this time one of the units stopped working. They don't repair, they send replacement.

**Q: Are these headphones suitable for heavy metal music (thrash/progressive metal in particular)?**
A: Hi ElvenLord : Sorry, I'm too old to give a specific answer for that genre. I can report on excellent results with old school such as Dark Side of the Moon and Tangerine Dream "The Sorcerer" but make sure your playback has a graphic equaliser app or feature. Also be aware that the range of size headband adjustment is ok but not marvellous.

**Q: Do I get the Koss lifetime warranty, if i buy these from you as oppose to the home site?**
A: Hama offer repairs in the UK and will do it under the lifetime warranty... I think you just need proof of purchase and a £5 handling charge

**Q: are these suitable for a kindle fire?**
A: Yes they work fine with my own kindle fire hd (2nd generation) as they both use 3.5mm stereo jack. This also means they will support most devices such as MP3 players and mobile phones.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great sound, very compact, tougher than it looks
*by R***R on 12 July 2011*

Okay, let's take a look at it how the Porta Pro looks - it's different, not to everyone's taste, and slightly retro if you ask me. The Amazon picture makes it seem like the brace connecting the earpieces is rather white, but it's brushed stainless steel and normally looks more grey/silver in my room's light. Now let's look at build quality - the earpieces are made of plastic, which is a bit disappointing, but I can live with it. The stainless steel rings on the earpieces look great and add strength. The stainless steel brace is also very durable despite the fact that it's relatively thin. It's also more flexible than it looks and can survive a knocking about. Moving onto functionality - the mechanism for adjusting the size of the headphones is very neat - you just slide the black parts together for a looser fit or apart for a tighter fit. They are very easy to slide, but don't do so unless you want them to. The headphones fit nicely on the ears and are quite comfortable once you find a position that suits you, but unfortunately for me, they do start to hurt my ears after about 90 minutes, hence the 4 stars. There is also a little button/slider on each earpiece labelled 'light' and 'firm'. I usually set it to firm because that's more comfortable for me and the sound goes deeper into my ears. Finally, sound quality. With the Porta Pro you get much more than you paid for. They are much better than any of the 'bigger' brands - I'd say it's about as good as a £50 Logitech. Also as a general rule, don't buy anything with 'gaming' in the title - you'll be paying more for a gimmick because video games don't really require a particular type of sound. Best sound quality is what you should look for and these provide amazing quality for an amazing price.
