Great Product
Being in a semi rural area we are more prone to power cuts with fallen trees during high winds, occurs at least once a year. Recently our power company had to replace underground cables and we had a day without power. End of story ......NO! They had problems and needed to place our village on a generator for a while to investigate. Within days, and we hear about it so often, some thieves decided they would like to rip out the genny cables to sell for the copper. Cables replaced and a couple of days later a further attempt was made to steal the cables. In the meantime my company computers are switching on and off at a very unhealthy rate, not to mention corrupting files and my work. I had been thinking of getting a UPS for a little while but unclear on which brand or model to get. These recent events helped to focus the mind and knowing of the APC brand decided to take the plunge and go for their Smart-UPS 1000VA. This was based on other reviews of similar models, as well as going to the APC website and checking the various UPS models against my own estimated equipment load. There are higher rated models but the 1000VA suited my needs and budget. With the usual exellent speedy delivery by Amazon and with suitable cables arriving just 24 hours before the next scheduled power outage I was able to set the UPS up just in time to give it a test. Set-up was straight forward with cables taken from the UPS to my main computer which uses two monitors, router, network hard drive, Skype phone. The display shows the load as being usually betweek 16 to 21%, giving somewhere around a 75 minutes runtime if utility power is interrupted. When our power went off I ran the connected equipment for some 30 minutes, switching off only because I had an appointment and had to go out, otherwise I'm sure I could have got another 30 minutes out of it. Although the outage was scheduled it was absolutely brilliant not having the worry of the system just suddenly going off. Totally in control of the situation. It is early days and I'm still learning the full functions available but I like the display interface, which can be set to give standard "basic" or more advanced information. A USB cable connects to your computer where you can configure the UPS using the supplied Powerchute software. Overall I'm very pleased with the performance and would not hesitate in recommending it.

Strong, Sturdy, Flexible, Reliable. (Purchased from Valutech Ltd)
Although this unit was bought as "Warehouse Damaged", and trust me, it really was. I can say that since switching it on a couple of months ago, it has performed faultlessly - despite looking like it had been dropped onto the floor: Hard. This speaks volumes as to how physically tough these APC devices are. The UPS has been called on to provide power several times since installation and we have had no issues. The UPS protects a Synology DS2411+/DX1211 server system and all works as it should. I cannot go into the supported operating functions much as all it does is protect this server. By this I mean, it is smart enough to run self-tests automatically without the need of a PC to initiate a test. The automated self-test and large capacity (indicates a 14% load) were the main reasons for purchase. APCs reputation and the low offer price from Valutech Ltd., made it something we had to buy. Something that may interest you: If you use the PowerChute software to control the UPS, you can specify, in some detail, how you wish the UPS to react to different failure conditions - how it can shut down attached devices in stages, etc. How? The SMT1500I has TWO banks of outputs at the back of the unit. These can be set so that power on/off can be staggered to increase the unit's run-time by shutting off unnecessary peripherals first, etc. Crucially (and unlike the SMC1500I), the SMT1500I also ships with a (bespoke-wired) serial cable (APC 940-0625A) for direct connection to some older servers - these cables can be hard to obtain as an after-market purchase. I mean REALLY hard. There was however a bit of a mix-up at the Valutech Ltd warehouse, when a kind individual decided not to send us the damaged unit, but sent an undamaged Smart-UPS SMC1500I instead - they did not realise the difference in model and they and the boxes look pretty much identical to the untrained eye. The SMC1500I didn't have the features we wanted for this installation, but Valutech offered us a good deal on that one too, so we bought both. It was either a genuine mix-up, or some really clever sales-work on Valutech's behalf, either way, they now have a customer for life. VERDICT: An incredible piece of kit at an unbeatable price. Even undamaged, worth every penny.

good product
UPS works well, unfortunately doesn't include a mains cable to connect it to the socket. for the sake a a few pounds this is a customer satisfaction disaster.

Packaging and Quality Control issues
This is a one star rating for APC SMT1500I UPS โ Not related to Amazon or the impressive specifications of this model, which is probably one of the best on the market in this category (1500VA, tower format, SmartSlot for network management). It appears that this model (and possibly others from APC) is plagued by packaging and Quality Control issues. We have ordered three of these units in 2017, two from Amazon.co.uk, and one from another reseller. In short, two were dead-on-arrival, and one was working but came physically damaged. The original packaging from APC is not sufficient to withstand the >24kg of this model. For all three units, the parcel came in a poor condition, with tape broken on both sides, and crushed polystyrene supports inside the box. The first unit had a severe ground fault, disrupting our electrical installation. The reseller later found that a circuit board inside the UPS had come off its mounting. The second unit did not turn on completely: the LCD display stayed blank and the fault LED turned on. The third unit appeared to work properly. All three units came with physical imperfections. One of the unit came with a slightly curved metal case, leaving a ~3mm gap on each of the two lateral sides of the front panel. All units came with rub marks on the sides of the metal case and of the plastic front cover (those were more or less visible depending on the units). Finally, the last unit came with additional damage on the front plastic panel. Therefore, given the poor packaging that may be linked to a high occurrence of dead-on-arrival units, all the physical imperfections, and all the troubles to return this >24kg product (in our case, Amazon was not able to offer a collection, even though they agreed to refund return shipping fees), we canโt recommend this model, and we hope that APC will take concrete measures to address these issues.

Excellent UPS for home/small office use.
After a lot of research I bought two units. Very high quality, well built and apparently reliable . This UPS is pure sine wave.....cheaper ones appear not to be. Very useful feature is that you can disable the audible alarm and not be woken at night to be informed of a power cut! (My old UPS did this). Comes with PowerChute software to control computer in the event of a power failure. The unit is quite large and is very heavy and no carrying handles. My only problem with the units (which are not cheap) is that they come without mains power leads...why?

On the fence ? Get it, you won't regret it.
I purchased 1000W version. I thought I would leave it a good year before writing a review on this product so that I had some time with it. I purchased this for two reasons. First to protect my computer and components from brownouts, second so that I still had a phone line and wireless internet in the event of a power outage. I recently had a computer fry itself after a brownout. It took the motherboard, PSU, hard drive and CPU with it on it's way out... I wasn't going to let it happen again ! Additionally with most people having wireless handsets for their land line phone, I'm not convinced people realise that if the power goes, you have no land line any more.... as well as your wireless internet. First a preface - 24/7 I have mine connected to: "Full size" tower desktop computer (Think mid thigh height powerhouse) - 5 hard drives, two graphics cards & an over-clocked processor. Two 1080p Asus 27 inch monitors Network router Managed network switch Home telephone Two POE (Power over Ethernet) access points at 27 volts each Be warned.. This is not a "desk standing" piece of kit. The only place you want it is directly on the floor. Don't even think about balancing/placing it on top of something. It weighs much more than you think it will... I live in an area that has pretty frequent "brown outs" and the occasional complete power cut, usually for a couple of hours at a time. The self test function is reassuring, and you feel the "clunk" of the relays switching in your feet a good meter or so away. So far, i must have had a good 8 or 9 brown outs, and two complete power cuts. I only realised when the sound stopped on my speakers (These are not connected to the device) and feeling the relays switch over. This device has never missed a beat, and silently waits until it is required. Even when it is doing its desired job it is practically silent. No louder than the desktop it is keeping powered. With all equipment connected and running at full whack, it will last a good 1 hour even if i am doing some serious editing of footage or in a full screen game. (Two Nvidia 980 in SLI) With the desktop turned off, it will go for a good 5 to 6 hours depending how fast I was turning off the desktop. Configuration was a breeze. The User Interface is straightforward and easy to understand. You can switch the " on battery" alarm on or off, send notifications to your desktop via Ethernet connection or USB. You can even install software that lets you monitor the UPS. I have not done this though so i can't comment on how that works. There are many other settings, but i won't go into them on here. Long and short of this review - It functions flawlessly, has kept my computer going on a number of occasions, and just sits there silently requiring no user intervention at all. It's not cheap, but spending some money to protect about ยฃ2000 worth of computer and network equipment has been worth it tenfold. What more could you want !? If your on the fence about this purchase. Get it, you will not be disappointed.

Looks great!
I had a previous model from APC which kept my system safe for years on end. However, just a few months ago the battery finally died and the unit became unusable - aside from not working, the unit also emits the most annoying of whines imaginable! Coincidentally, just a couple of moths subsequent to the death of my old APC unit, my Windows based PC crashed big time - again! To say I was not pleased by said hardware crash could be the understatement of the century; and finally having quite enough of everything Windows, I decided to take out a second mortgage (just kidding) and purchase a brand new, sparkly 27" iMac 5k Retina. Furthermore, on discovering virtually nothing in my hardware collection actually worked with my new iMac, I went quite mad and purchased a worryingly large number of hardware beauties. A new Colour Laser Printer, a new Photo Scanner, and a superb and quite enormous new A3 dedicated Photo printer to be specific. Add to this little lot a Disk Drive (Apple have none), a Blu-Ray Drive (Apple do not like Blu-Ray apparently?) Raid External Hard Disk Storage, and a couple of USB Hubs, etc...and I may just have to leave my homeland soon! First impressions are my new APC is just as heavy as the old one - they weigh a ton for such a compact unit! The item comes with a minimum of documentation, and several leads. Rather surprisingly, the unit does not appear to come with a UK mains lead? My old APC unit certainly came with a UK mains lead, so I am rather puzzled why it is missing from my new example? Anyway, although unpacked, scrutinised and much admired, I have not as yet actually installed the unit with all my bits and bobs. It will be a hassle with my particular home office configuration, and will inevitably involve much grovelling on the floor which is not a pleasant prospect. Thus, watch this space! I will hope to provide a better review when the deed is eventually done. Postscript :- All up and running well. Tried to install the Powerchute software, but my iMac didn't want to know. Subsequently, I have learned their is software already built into OS-X to handle an APC UPS? Need to investigate further, but by the look of it I will not need the APC software at all which is handy.

Compact, easy to operate & works well
This unit is compact & sits on edge of desk & provides power to: two pc's, two Buffalo Drive Station external disk drives & router. Has display which shows % load. It replaced an old battery back up unit on which alarm would not turn off if power went of for a while, very annoying at night. On this unit it's very easy to turn system & alarm off if necessary. Have not bothered to link it to pc's as always around when backups to pc's being carried out. Had to also separately purchase an ICE C14 to 6 Way Gang UK Mains Extension Socket Lead to connect in back of APC unit, which has six of these computer type power outlet sockets, and pc's e.t.c all have square three pin plugs.
