All Boss Stomp pedals use the same power supply and are worth having Amazon supply them just type in Power supply for Boss Stomp pedals. You can use it also on a PP3 9V battery but Battery may only last a couple of hours so better off with Power supply and save you a fortune on Batteries.You can use the power supply on any other pedals as well. is this pedal for Valve amps only?

This is a classic Boss effect which works well with most guitar amps.

If I played the mandolin strumming chords and then used the pedal for an instrument would the volume increase?

This question doesn't quite make sense. Use the pedal for an instrument? Or use it as an amp? If the later, you'd still need an amplifier. Would it boost your signal? Yes, but unless you want O/D on a mandolin, why not just turn your amp up?
