Brilliant phone for a reasonable price
I purchased this phone as a replacement to my S7. After managing to break that one, I was after an affordable replacement. I was slightly dubious about getting a lower spec version, but since receiving this phone I am actually kicking myself for ever worrying about getting the newest versions. As a very quick summary; I love that this phone takes an SD card, which means I get more storage room and for the price it is just as fast and the display as clear as more expensive versions. Lengthy summary: I use my mobile a fair bit and for a variety of reasons and so far I haven't found anything to make me want to review this less than five stars (if I do I will update this review with details). When it arrived I popped it on charge and could see it already had around 40%, so enough to start setting things up. It comes with the usual pin to open the sim slots. There are two slots as this phone takes dual sim and an SD card. The first slot takes sim 1 and the SD card and second sim can go into slot 2. I haven't used a second sim, so can't comment on whether this works well or not, but when I downloaded WhatsApp it popped up with a notification suggesting I download a second copy for a different number, so it looks like it is well set up to use a second one and will help you to get it set up properly. The phone picked up my network quickly and I could make calls and send texts, but I had no data coverage. I am not sure if this is related to the phone or to do with my network, but either way it was simple to fix. I won't give full details here as I'm sure the fix varies from network to network, but it is basically to do with needing to set up the APN settings. Google what settings you need and put these into the APN section within settings/network and you should be good to go (or at least I was!). The phone supports 4G and the usual wifi, bluetooth, etc. The screen is large and clear and comes with some basic Android apps installed. Once connected to the internet you can connect to pick up emails and phone numbers you've got linked to your accounts. Sound is perfect, camera is great (actually slightly better than my S7). Apps run without trouble and there's no noticeable slowness due to having a lower amount of ram - I'm finding it works quickly for downloading and streaming. The phone has thumbprint recognition that is quick and easy to set up (it is one of the first things it gets you to do once you switch it on). In the box is a charger (normal speed, not fast charge) and headphones. The phone is sturdy and the standard size of the Samsung range. Oh, and it also has fm transmitter on it! I've not seen this on a phone for a while. I can't say I have used it, but it's nice to have the option! In truth, I wasn't expecting much from this phone, but am really pleased with it. Hopefully I won't break this one anytime soon!

Such a Brilliant phone
i ordered two of these for me and my partner and we are both really happy with them the battery life will last around 2 days without having to plug it in and the camera quality is amazing there is good camera stabilisation as well. this phone comes with two 12MP cameras (front and back) and this is really good for photos and selfies. it takes two nano sims and also an Micro SD card and this will give you more than enough space for your photos and apps as it comes with an amazing 16GBs worth of storage built in only one fault with this phone is that there is not much water protection in the speaker port but as long as you do not go outside in pouring rain with it in your hand you should be fine.

Senior Citizen initial review: Samsung J5 (2017)
I am a senior citizen and moved from a Samsung Galaxy G4 Mini principally because the mic developed a fault (and the screen was a bit small). I use pay-as-you-go and simply do not insure my mobile (so many people seem to waste so much money on unnecessary insurance). The characters on the J5 are simply not bold enough (size for size comparison of characters with G4 Mini. Why would Samsung make such a backward move? However, in principle, the black characters on a white background are a good move: pity that they are harder to read -like for like - than on the G4 Mini !! Surely this is a very basic design error. As I do my serious on-line business communications via laptop (mostly kept in home office) and do not wish to carry out any of my business or financial communications via a mobile phone (how safe would it be if lost and deciphered by thieves who have very sophisticated equipment these days ?) Operational software seems to be a little over complicated and confusing in part. Battery life seems to be reasonable so far.

Best specced budget smartphone
Best specced budget smartphone , nice feel and has a metal anodised body, included are all the sensors I need such as Geomagnetometer compass and Gyro which no other phones in this price bracket have , this means outdoor apps will work well as will VR headsets and VR apps, 16 gig is on the small side but its enough if you dont need hundreds of apps, good screen , camera is adequate in well lit scenes , not so good in low light, fingerprint sensor is really handy for securing the phone , speaker sound quality is OK but not as good as some , all in all a really good for the money

Best phone I've had by a mile.
I have had this phone for nearly twelve months and it has performed fantastically. It charges up quite quickly in comparison to many of the other phones I've had and the battery life is long lasting. Display is wonderfully clear and sharp. I cannot fault the phones functionality and connectivity to WiFi. I do have an issue with MMS however, the instructions provided on the phone to solve this are frustrating to find in the first instance and do not then provide the guidance to solve the issue. Could be me though as I am getting on a bit.

Absolutely Useless As A Phone
I purchase this phone on Amazon from CityService-UK, having ha a Blackberry phone for nearly 20 years, and having been perfectly happy with it. I was forced to buy another phone, when switching from BT broadband to Plusnet, my broadband was accidently switched off for three days, and this meant that the signal to my Ring Doorbell and chimes disappeared, and unbeknownst to me, Ring had been sold to Amazon, and this meant for some reason that Microsoft no longer supported their products. When my broadband came back on, my Ring devices were no longer recognised, either by my Blackberry phone or by my Microsoft tablet, and I was advised by Ring that because they had been sold and Microsoft were no longer supporting their products, my devices disappearing now meant that they would be classed as 'new' products, so they could not be readded to either my Blackberry phone, or my Microsoft tablet, and I would have to get a new phone in order to use them. This was obviously ridiculous, but I kid you not, this was in fact the case. Since I am disabled and seriously ill, and relied on my Ring doorbell, I was therefore forced to find a solution I therefore decided to buy this Samsung phone, to use as a handset for my doorbell, and as a back up phone. I ordered the phone and set up my Ring devices with it, and all seemed to be working well. However, approximately a month later, and too long afterwards to return it, when I then left home with it for the first time and tried to check my Ring app, I discovered that the phone brought up an error stating that it could not connect to the network. I had not previously noticed this, because obviously indoors it was connected to my home wifi. I then investigated this error, and found it to be ridiculously common to Samsung phones, with literally thousands of people online searching for solutions. I have tried every one of these solutions, over months and months, including a complete factory reset, and absolutely nothing will get this phone to perform its one basic function, which is to be a phone and connect to a network. I have also taken it into various phone shops and no one else can suggest anything helpful either, other than to get a new phone, and to avoid this manufacturer in future. I am astonished that this manufacturer can produce phones, and with this level of malfunction, and still be in business. I could not and would not ever recommend a Samsung phone to anyone. This is not a cheap throwaway phone, it is not in fact, a phone at all, based on its performance and usefulness as a product, but clearly this error, and it is a major one, is not an isolated one, and no manufacturer should be selling phones unless they have resolved it. Clearly they have not, and that makes buying any phone from them a gamble, and one I would never have taken had I been aware of the level of malfunction of this product, before I purchased it. I am writing this review so that you can be aware where I was not. Search 'cannot connect to network' or 'network not found' error on Samsung phone to see what I mean.

Much research followed and I settled on the Samsung J5 (2017) as best for my needs
After many years resistance, I finally decided to accept the inevitable and buy a smartphone. Much research followed and I settled on the Samsung J5 (2017) as best for my needs. I wanted a dual sim version, which meant that it would have to be an EU import with all the uncertainties regarding warranty (why can’t we have a UK dual sim version?). However, given that the price was £50 less than the UK single sim version, it seemed worth the risk. I ordered it from Fonogram and the purchase went without incident. The phone arrived in 3 days, in sealed packaging and with a separate UK plug. The phone itself appeared to be from a Polish or Slovakian source, but it was simple to change the language and everything was fairly straightforward to set up. The phone itself seems to be good. Battery life is excellent (probably comfortably lasts a couple of days) and using it as a mobile hotspot has been impressive – I’m getting download speeds more than double my broadband connection – makes me wonder whether there is any point in keeping a landline. Everything has worked as expected and although some of the Samsung bloatware is a bit irritating, there have been no major problems. Pleased with my purchase.

Fair phone for a fair price.
Very pleased so far. I am basing my review against my old phone which was well past it's sell by date. All I can say is that I find the j5 responsive, clear to use and with a very sharp screen image. This may sound shallow but I chose the light blue model which is totally too cool for school! At less than a third of the cost of a lot of the 'top phones', doing just about everything well, it must be said it is very good value for money.

Samsung Galaxy J5 - blau
