I have just returned from a 2 day bike ride and used it to secure a gym bag size load on my rear rack. I used a couple of cheap bungees as well but this was only because I was quite some distance from home and had a couple of small items which would have gone through the mesh . It would be really useful for securing a small tent or other camping items. Bear in mind the holes on the mesh are quite large ( 5-8 cm when not stretched) and the net itself is not lightweight so if you are wanting to keep it lightweight when cycling you might be best keeping to just panniers without this as an additional weight.
