The Fruit Tree Grease Band will protect your trees and fruit by trapping the moths before they have a chance to lay eggs, preventing problems later when the caterpillars emerge to feed on leaves. Fruit tree lovers Grease bands are mainly used to protect fruit trees such as apple, plum, pear and cherry from winter moth caterpillars, however bands will also provide protection from tree trunk travelling ants and earwigs. Winter moths’ caterpillars will eat holes in leaves, blossom and apple fruitlets reducing the amount of fruit produced. Winter moths have wingless females which, after emerging from the chrysalis stage in the soil, will climb the fruit tree to mate and lay their eggs. The wingless females are trapped by the grease bands preventing reproduction and infestation in the tree. The caterpillar of the winter moth will lay their eggs from March to June. Controls Grease bands will work well to control the plight of an insect, including ants from travelling up the bark of the tree. Bands will work on smooth bark trees; less smooth, more fissured/rough bark will benefit more from a grease applied direct to the bark. Note that grease bands will not be effective against the Codling or Plum moth; these pests require an alternative approach. For the protection of ants and earwigs, apply bands in the summer months. When to defend against infestations Grease bands should be placed on trucks and tree stakes around October before the adult moths begin to appear in November. Moth activity will decline after January but some wingless females can be active up until April. Gloves are absolutely essential and a second pair of (gloves) hands is extremely helpful. We found one person unfolding the band and wrapping around the tree, with another person cutting to length and securing to be the best process. Included twine The included twine might be usable on large trees, but on my small saplings it was absolutely useless. Chuck it before you start and grab a roll of decent electrical tape. This also helps with knobbly trunks as you can bend the band over the bump and secure it top and bottom. This has closed up all of the little gaps allowing ants under the band. Ants crossing the grease: Yes the ants can still cross the grease, it slows them down a fair bit but they make it across. Regardless of this fact the number of ants above the band has reduced from several dozen per day, to a singular ant in the week since. It is definitely discouraging them from crossing, so serves its purpose quite well. Is it petroleum jelly? What prevents it from drying out? Which grease bands are double -stick?** A: I don't know what it is but it lasts until the winter and then I replace it in the spring. **Q: How do you get the stickiness off your fingers?. Couldn't do it with gloves on.** A: On the packages I've received, the manufacturers recommend using vegetable oil to remove the grease from hands. That plus a good rinse with washing up liquid afterwards worked for me. Also the hand wipes you get in DIY stores - for removing silicone etc from hands - do the trick. Otherwise yep avoid it with disposable thin latex gloves, we buy packs when on offer in Lidl and Aldi and keep them in the garage for various messy gardening tasks. **Q: At what age of the tree should you use grease bands** A: Hi, From research, we can suggest that you use grease bands on trees that are 45cm (18in) above soil level. **Q: Can this be used on a fence to keep our cats from climbing over?** A: NO! This is not what it is designed for. A very messy and difficult product to handle. It took me ages to remove it from hands, scissors etc. I think it would be very unwise to use it as you wish. If it gets on your cats fir they could try to lick it of or get in their eyes and on paws with dire consequences. You would have to cut the fir off or take them to the vet.
