It's pretty strong for a large traditional umbrella. If you want something that will stand up to a gale, I would go for a "Blunt" umbrella. They are designed by a New Zealander from Wellington, specifically to handle strong wind conditions.

There is a button that you press but you have to push this to open the umbrella. It does not open on its own.
