Twelve Remarkable Women
This is a relatively short introduction to the lives of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam), the 'Mothers of the Believers' as they are known throughout the Muslim world. The book covers only the milestones in their lives and doesn't go in to any significant detail. It begins chronologically in date of order of when they each married the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam). Hence their lives are covered as follows: Khadija bint Khuwaylid Sawda bint Zam'a `A'isha Siddiqa bint Abu Bakr Hafsa bint `Umar Zaynab bint Khuzayma Umm Salama Hind bint Abi Umayya Zaynab bint Jahsh Juwayriyya bint al-Harith Umm Habiba Ramla bint Abi Sufyan Safiyya bint Huyayy Maymuna bint al-Harith Maria al-Qibtiyya This is the fourth edition published by Ta-Ha Publishers and is written by Ahmad Thomson of the Murabitun movement. It is a good introductory work but do not expect it to cover the lives of the Mothers of the Believers in detail. It is basic in this sense but I assume it is authored with this in mind. Hence anyone can pick this work up and become familiar with the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam). It is easy to read and intersperses the life of the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam) with the lives of his wives in terms of the events that took place at the time he married them and the important events that took place while they were in his life. The book lacks references as to where the information has come from, even though the events and quotes narrated are mostly famous and well known it would have been of benefit to include the sources. There is a bibliography included at the end but this does little to pin-point where certain quotes are found. As with any work which covers twelve unique and remarkable personalities, it doesn't give them even treatment in the pages covering their lives. This nonetheless is understandable as more information is available for say A'isha Siddiqa (twenty-four pages) in comparison to say Maymuna bint al-Harith (four pages). However, even then it only touches upon the milestones of their lives and could have included more information. It is still a good introduction for each of them and if you know little of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam) then this book is a good place to start. The book closes with a chapter on the position of `A'isha and her significance as well as her close connection to the Prophet Muhammad (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam). The author then brings the book to an end with a conclusion on the importance of showing respect to the Family of the Prophet (ṣallâ Allâhu ʿalayhi wasallam) and warning those that curse any personalities from among his family. I have given it four out of five with in mind that it is an introductory work hence it meets its intent and purpose and for the price it is a worthy purchase.
