Does the speaker prevent your bed partner from hearing the music? That's what I am trying to acheive.

If the amplifier is on with the volume at max loudness, your bed partner would have to have the hearing of a bat to hear tv or music. If you have the speaker under just a little bit of a pillow, she'd have to be akin to a superhero to hear anything. Specifically --- I doubt if your bed partner will be able to hear whatever you're listening to.

Will this be audible under a foam pillow?

Yes! I have several memory foam pillows of different thicknesses and the Sangean speaker works with all of them. The Sangean pillow speaker has both an inline amplifier and an inline volume control. It is imporant to also adjust the volume of your smartphone, radio, or other device.

does it need batteries

This a low-fi speaker. I use it for listening to the radio in the morning before I am ready to get out of bed. The sound of the music is OK, but if that is your main reason for using a pillow speaker, you might reconsider.
