The force required to compress the center ring and handle equals the resistance of the spring. And this is *before* you are moving the tamping base plate even a single millimeter towards the coffee. Mine goes back to Amazon instantly. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Calibrated? Who cares! *by J***W on October 8, 2022* Honestly, there's no real reason to worry about how hard you're tamping. There's no real difference between a 15 lb, 30 lb, or 50 lb tamp. Standard brewing pressures from your espresso machine will end up compacting the puck much more than that. As long as your espresso puck is tamped flat and reasonably compact, everything will work out fine. That said, the one great feature of this tamper is that there is a bit of a lip around the edge to help ensure that your tamp is level to the rim of the basket - and that's all I'm looking for. In fact, I ended up removing the spring, as it can be a bit difficult to clean the tamper when coffee gets trapped in the middle. It's worked fine for my stock 54mm Breville unpressurized basket, as well as my 14-16g IMS basket.
