This Nextion 5” Intelligent HMI is more than just a display. It lets you build buttons, sliders, gauges, and menus right on the screen itself, which makes adding a touch interface to projects much easier than I expected. The Nextion Editor software is simple to use and makes designing the interface feel more like drag-and-drop than programming. The screen is bright, the touch response is solid, and it works great with popular boards like Arduino and ESP32 for things like DIY control panels, dashboards, and small automation projects. If you’re a hobbyist looking to add a clean, professional-looking touchscreen to your builds without a steep learning curve, this is a great choice. Highly recommended.

Well, it looks nice. I was able to user there software and update the background and put in the variables. That was about it. No matter what I tried I could not get my Arduino Mega to talk to this thing. I tried a 2nd Arduino I had and to no avail. So I switched to a Stone HMI display and was able to get that working. If you can, just use the Stone HMI display... I'm giving 3 starts as the software worked and the Display looks nice. I just wish I could have gotten it to work.

This is my second nextion screen, and I will continue using them for projects of all sizes in the future. I would say that I am avid at interfacing them with Arduino and esp32, so I’ll give you some pros and cons 😉. Pros: - These screens have a lot of features. Because they have their own on board chip, it doesn’t use any of the arduino’s power for graphics. This lets you be able to have more complex and good looking UIs. - There are a lot of videos out there with getting this to work with Arduino and ESPHome. It is more complex than a regular tft screen, but when you understand serial communications, it can get easier to program between. - Because this is a capacitive touch screen, it is really good for projects where you don’t want to have to press hard on to register press or slide gestures, such as an information screen where you need to scroll. Con’s: - This is a more complex screen with a separate software to learn in order to get it to work for your own projects. There is a pretty steep learning curve, so be ready for the ride - The language that the software uses is its own thing. There are a lot of things that it doesn’t like, and it especially doesn’t like complex math equations. You will understand later on. This is a great screen for projects with Arduino or anything with a serial port for programming. Just be ready for many hours of learning the software and a whole new programming language that doesn’t make too much sense.
