How close does the magnet need to be to switch to work?

The range of area for this switch is so tight and unpredictable, we do not recommend the use of this switch. Every unit we used the switch in needed to be replace with a glass reed switch.

how does this work? Does it need a magnet on it to stay on. Or hit w/ magnet to turn it on, and again for off?

When you approach a magnet the switch changes state. When you move it away the switch returns to its normal position. D'ont hit it. Do not hit it or you will break the glass.

Is any one having issues with the normally closed unit? They seem to fail after a few cycles.

Not using NC units but no issues after 6 months of service - hope that helps.

yes it need a magnet to control the switch, magnetic is close to switch: circuit connect, magnetic is far away to switch: circuit disconnect
