For the price, this item works great. It is not a detector that sniffs the air for readings like the long probes you see energy companies have. It is a smaller device that works well for testing for natural gas leaks at the source. This means you must hold it gently against an area that you want to check for a moment. It is great for checking around valves or other seals that could leak gas such as your water heater tubes or gas stove. I had a 1lb propane tank shut off and it was able to detect residual propane on the tip of it, which is what Xcel energy did one time with their probes in front of me, so if it can catch that, it likely will catch other non-smelling leaks, but you must go slow around the areas you are testing and also turn the S on for sensitive.

This device does require a 30 second zero level calibration each time you turn it on. I used it to detect and pinpoint a natural gas leak around the gas valve controller on my water heater. Very easy to use and was very effective. The display and audible alarm quickly reveal how much gas is being detected. I thought the price was good too.

This is a nice size independent way to test for gas leaks. Purchased to carry in my campervan to test connections from my 10lb propane tank to gas stove and other appliances. I tested against my home cooking gas stove and it performs as expected. Nice insurance for on-spot testing at threads in addition to my cabin battery gas and CO monitor.

Purchased to have around after hearing about a natural gas leak that caused a house to explode in a town just a few miles away. I figured better to be safe. Also will work well when I am using my propane heater in my garage to ensure I have the fitting tightened down properly. Works well and gives alert when it should without false readings. Easy to test as well.
