Has lots of pictures and covers a lot of topics. I got it used but it was still readable so all is good. No color pictures as the cover may dipict. But lots of black and white drawings. The topics are discribed in short conscise paragraphs. Not may are over a page long. That being said, it covers a lot of material and each chapter is made up of like topics.

Expected more photos and bigger book , however the book is well worth it with plenty of knowledge and wisdom to learn about our various cultures and world. a well thank you to the writers and publisher for an outstanding book.

This book is a good resource for those who seek a better understanding of the origin of symbols used around us every day. A symbol stands for something else; usually something invisible, or secret. I am particularly interested in recognizing esoteric meanings of symbols (and/or signs) that appear in logos. Most people who design the logos know exactly what they're doing, and many organizations use these particular logos and symbols intentionally because they know precisely what is represented. The average person may be unaware of what is being symbolically portrayed and not everyone who uses the logos understands the symbology or the meanings behind the symbols. I found this book to be good because it has simple descriptions and clarifies aspects of symbols along with illustrations. It is not an exhaustive resource for researching symbols, but I consider it a good book to have in my library. I gave 4 stars rather than 5 because of the brevity of this book.

good book on the diagramatic representations which have come down to us from history. much defining and background on most of those. a few sections covering diverse categorical subdivisions and of almost every kind, from primitive designs to math to nature and more.

Great book, highly informative and I'm having fun learning how to surf through it for what I want. I will eventually get each book in the series.

A good read to get a handle on the basics of signs and symbols. Very interesting, as it covers a large amount, from various religions and secret societies.

なるほど，よくぞここまでと思えるほど，種々の記号，象徴がイラストとともに説明されている．ところが意外なことにおなじみの数学記号（分数表記についても）がどこにも出てこないのはどうしてなのか，解せないことだ．既知のことと思われているのだろうか．♁，♂などについても解説はない．無論，どうでもいいと思えるものも取り上げられているのでこの点は，我々と欧米人の視点の違いだろうか． それにしても腹立たしいのは装丁のまずさだ．本書は中国で印刷，製本されたものだが，中国の製本技術はこの程度なのかと思わせるほどいけない．読みだしてほどなく，背表紙がはずれてしまったのだ．日本でならこんなことはありえないことと思えるが，根本的には出版社の姿勢が問われることは確かだ．
