Make sure your fluid is topped off, and also, top it off (and drive it for a while) before you test it, so the fluid gets a chance to mix. **Q: How do I make this thing work? Readings never change regardless which fluids cover the contacts! Cannot turn it off.** A: Make sure the battery is good turn it on then select the brake fluid type mine is DOT 4 witch is #2 on the left side on scale or selection the percentage of moisture is on right side of the scale or lights. Turn it on lights should appear then submerge both probes in brake fluid and the lights on right side will indicate the percentage of moisture in fluid. It none of that works return it or exchange it for new one. Insert probes in liquid Read the results. Wait 30 seconds for the tester to shut itself off. There is no way to turn off other than wait. If you want to sample two fluids, you must wait for the tester to time out before you can test again. It appears to actually read something because I got different readings from two different fluid sources.
