Great memoirs!
An amazing inside look into the Waffen-SS and Skorzeny's commando operations. But what I appreciated even more was the "voice" of the author, sometimes sarcastic, sometimes bitter, sometimes hilarious but I couldn't get rid of the feeling that he was sitting in the same room with me and telling his stories. The book isn't your typical dry account of certain historical events, and I would highly recommend it to everyone interested in WWII history. What I also liked was that unlike Walther Schellenberg for example, Skorzeny didn't try to picture himself an "all good, innocent man and a victim of the circumstances." His memoirs are more or less honest account of a regular soldier, even though a very gifted and lucky one. His praises of the Russian army and their bravery was also a very nice touch, just like his mentioning of certain guards in Nuremberg, who he befriended in spite of the constant picking and hatred directed towards the prisoners from the prison administration. It's those little details that made it a very personal and very compelling read. Loved it!

Tales from WWll by Nazi Commando. Naturally Skewed. No mention of the atrocities.
Skorzeny gives an insider view of wins and losses by the Germany military. He finds fault with their leadership and some strategic errors by the Allies. Tough assignments (rescueing Mussolini) and using GI uniforms to fool the Allies during the battle of the Bulge. His personal impressions of meeting the intense and charismatic persona that was Hitler. His own dissappointment that the Allies didnt unite with the Nazis to strike a killing blow against Communism. Not entirely surprising was his failure to acknowlege the role of forced labor of enslaved Europeans to fuel the war machinery. I dont recall any accounting for the persecution of Jews and others considered subhuman by the Nazis. No attempt to address the holocaust. Reading it as a biased account of the war was fascinating to me.

Finally a book that isnt full of allied propoganda!
Most books these days start out with talking of death camps on nanking, they want to make sure you dont forget and make sure you NEVER try to understand the German or Japanese view of ww2. Ottos book is amazing, he is the most loyal and one of the bravest soldiers I have ever read about, the book is excellent about Otto Skorzenys roll during ww2 from the man himself. Alot of pictures you wont find on the internet along with TONS of info you will find nowhere else. Otto remained loyal to the fuhrer his entire life, hes not some crazy nazi nut who wants to kill jews as other books would potray him, rather hes a man who faught for his country, believed in his leader and wanted to make his country a better place for the people. He seems to believe that alot of the nazi big shots such as Himmler were idiots and that Hitler did not lose the war, the reason the war was lost was because the soviets had an extensive spy network even in the OKW! Great book, non of the hate germans propoganda and its told excellent. Buy the book, its worth every penny.

"I always wanted peace and was never a Nazi....." Otto S.
An entertaining read. Definitely gives insight into a very egotistical and narcissistic mind. Of course, good old Otto was a devote man of peace and was NEVER, EVER a Nazi, nor did he believe in Nazi ideals (that's sarcasm by the way). One star was lost for the man's delusions of grandeur. A 2nd star was lost because this man simply cannot write. He wanders and meanders constantly throughout the book from one thought to the next disjointed thought with not transitions in-between. But like I said, it is entertaining to see just what a nut he was.
