Perfect for Buzz Cuts & Fades
I recently buzzed my hair off and have been using the Wahl Professional 5 Star Black Cord/Cordless Magic Clip with both the 0.5 guard and no guard, and itโs been excellent. The stagger-tooth blade makes blending super smooth, and the tension/taper lever gives really solid control for fades and cleanup work. Battery life easily lasts through multiple cuts, and the cordless design feels lightweight without losing power. Great option if youโre cutting your own hair and want something that feels genuinely professional.

Clearly Quality and Made for Professionals as Advertised
UPDATE 4/22/2023: Been about 3 1/2 years and this thing is still going strong. Staying nice and sharp. I've noticed getting my hair cut down the street that some of the barbers use these as well. If this breaks I'm definitely buying the exact same one again if it's still around. ____________________________ My main goal for my hair is just in beard/stubble trimming. I am not a professional and I don't cut my own hair. The goal for my trimmers is that they provide reasonably close trimming on the sensitive skin of my face, since I can't use a regular razor. Also, I want something that is quality, and I would rather spend more for something that lasts. My last requirement is that the trimmer be wireless. With that as the background: The first trimmer I ever bought worked surprisingly well for being so cheap, about $35. It was a ConairMAN HC1100R. Holds a charge well, powerful motor, close-enough shave for the neck area. Only problem is the mechanism for tapering the blade would break after months of going back and forth between neck and face (adjusting for longer length on the face). This caused the blade to become unstable, loud, and cut poorly. I've been through three of these things, and when my third one just broke in October of 2019 despite being purchased in February, I decided I needed to move on. In a hurry I purchased the Wahl 8290 which I have nothing bad to say about because I never used it. My genius self didn't bother to realize it's not cordless. I next jumped on the GOOLEEEN hair clippers, cordless, LED display, IPX7 waterproof, and advertised as "professional." Long story short, the motor sounds and feels weak, the cutting mechanism is half plastic, and the thing was immediately tugging out my hair even in already short and not very dense facial hair. After a bit more research, I decided to try the ConairMAN Super Stubble, also with a waterproof rating. This one has a pre-attached motorized guard that you can adjust digitally. I can't believe I spent $112 on this thing. The motor feels weak and cheap, and the whole unit feels a little cheap. The guard itself is a nice try at innovation but something about it made it take waaaay more passes to evenly cut my facial hair, like I've ever experienced before. And no matter how many passes I did take, it still never quite felt like I was done. Also, that tiny motor that adjusts the guard seems like it will be the first thing that breaks, which is crazy because one of the "features" of the device is that the motor automatically returns the guard to a preset length when you turn the device off, and then returns yet again to whatever length you were using previously once you turn it back on. Meaning there are a ton of unnecessary movements of the motor that are only going to ensure it's the first thing to go. The only positive thing I can say is that when you flip the guard back and just use the blade without the guard, you get a pretty close cut, so close it actually cut my skin a little bit but nothing terrible. After doing even more research, watching more youtube videos, etc., I finally landed on this, the Wahl 8148. At about $30 less than the Super Stubble, I'm very happy. I'd be happy even if it were the same price as the Super Stubble. The motor feels strong (though it seems to be comparably louder than some other nice professional models I saw reviewed). The unit feels sturdy, and the blades make quick and even work of my facial hair just like my first Conair. I also like that, unlike all the other models I tried, the tapering bar for the blade operates on a smooth gradient, not large clicking progressions. Meaning you can be extra meticulous in your blending which seems extra useful when you're working with hair that's overall short to begin with. You can operate cordless or plugged in. Some reviews complain there's more power when the unit is plugged in, but in my opinion that's a feature, not a flaw. This means the unit can utilized the extra draw from the wall that you probably can't get from a lithium ion battery alone, if you need that extra power for whatever reason. I expect this thing to easily provide years of reliable use and I will definitely be back to post an update if not.

This thing can split a hair!
I didn't realize this was cordless until I pulled it out of the box! Aside from having the pleasure of not playing "jump rope" with a cord hanging off clippers, what impressed me about these clippers is that they accurately and quickly cut through thick dry hair that was nearly a foot long in two passes. The first pass was quick and careless, and the second pass going against the direction my hair was growing. It only took a couple of minutes and the results were tight and even. With cheaper clippers, I would often have to make multiple passes -- as if I'm cutting a steak with a dull knife. Cheaper clippers never gave my hair a "well manicured" look (similar to the grass on a golf course .... versus sprawling crab grass). What's even better, although they're not trimmers. it reduced my beard to a 5:00 Shadow! Not a single snag! The adjustment lever gives a lot more "adjustment" compared to other clippers sold to consumers. I find this useful for trimming the sides of my head. If I shave a little too high, I can balance out the shape of my head by shaving a little tighter just above the ears. Armpit hair simply melts off with these clippers. Great for trimming body hair. They could make a wooly mammoth look like a shaved chihuahua. Complete with a loop to hang on a hook, they're ready to hang next to other grooming toys. These are perfect for cutting your own hair and they cut tight enough that you can taper the hair at the bottom of your neck if your'e not too good at using two mirrors or shaving with your eyes shut. I'm not sure if a professional would use these or not, but they have a more powerful motor despite being rechargeable and that probably accounts for most of their performance. I don't know much about blades on professional clippers, but, I'm pretty sure a lot of them have different blades regardless of how adjustable they may be. The other thing I haven't looked into is what's involved in replacing or servicing the blades on these. I throw cheap pairs ($15-$25) out after 8-12 months of perpetual use so that's something I need to look into. I would still suggest a set of trimmers if you're looking for clippers that will replace an electric razor. These will get close but they're not designed for spitting hairs --- but they'll get your hair short enough that finishing work can be performed with a tool designed for that purpose. I'm glad I bought these. Now that I've had the taste of a good tool in my hand, I'll probably invest in yet another (more professional) pair in the future. It's still costs less in the long run compared to having my hair cut somewhere.

Quality Clippers for those looking to cut their own hair.
Great hair clipper. I trim my hair every two weeks and having a reliable, quality clipper saves me time and provides an accurate cut. Did need to purchase additional guards for fade and shorter clips.

Great clippers, 3 cheers for cordless, but package not perfect for home-use
I'll update this review as I get some more time with the clippers, but initial impressions (unboxing and one haircut) are good! The clippers seem to be very well-made, have a good weight (without feeling too heavy), good ergonomics, and cut well! For a bit of background, I purchased these to cut my own hair. I've done so with a cheap set of Conair clippers from Walmart for the past ... 10-12 years I believe. While they got the job done and earned their $30-ish purchase price many times over, there were a few things about them that I wished were different from day one. First of all, they were corded, but 10-12 years ago there just weren't good (affordable) cordless options and battery technology was still mostly NiCd / NiMH. Lithium-based batteries today are much more betterer! :) Other annoyances were the fact that they were fairly loud and didn't cut quite as well - especially if I tried to go faster - when compared to the ones my barber used any time I'd go see her. The Wahl Cordless Magic Clips looked like just the item to address all the shortcomings of the old Conairs when they began to malfunction. They were cordless (Yay!), professional quality for better quality cut and more power to allow moving a bit faster, and from reviews and a few videos seemed to be a bit quieter. Again, I'm only one cut into using these, but so far they've lived up to my expectations in all these areas! So why have I deducted a star? Well, there are a few reasons, all minor, and only one directly related to the clippers themselves. With regard to the clippers, the Conairs had very definite settings when adjusting the taper lever. The Wahls seem to be more "infinitely adjustable", without the little detents that the lever clicks into as you adjust. This is not a huge thing obviously, but since I got used to it, it was nice to know I was always setting the taper lever at the same setting each time. I appreciated the repeatability of the Conair design a bit more. The other items are more related to packaging and accessories. Again, keep in mind that i'm comparing this to a set of $30 clippers from Walmart ... also, I understand that the Wahls are marketed as a professional set and not as much for the home user. This difference in target audience, of course, is probably the reason for my perceived shortcomings, but still ... if Conair could do it for $30, then Wahl could do it for $80-90. Just sayin. Anyway, the Conairs came in a nice hard-plastic box that had foam padding and room for the clippers and accessories. The Wahls just have the cardboard packaging which is clearly meant to be discarded rather than used for storage. Since I'm not running a barber shop, mine get stuck under the bathroom counter most of the time and pulled out every other week for a trim. I wish I hadn't chunked the Conair box, because I'd be using it for the Wahls. *facepalm* Also, the Conairs included a nice little brush, about 2" wide, which I presume is designed for cleaning yourself and surfaces of hair clippings as well as a tiny brush for cleaning the clippers themselves. The Wahls just have the tiny one. Thankfully I DID keep the one from the Conair set because it's invaluable for cleaning up the bathroom counter after I cut my hair. Much easier than most anything else I've tried because it actually gets all the hair up without the hair sticking to it. And not that I really used these items as much, but the Conair set included a small set of scissors and a better (IMO) comb than what came with the Wahls. As I mentioned above, I do understand the likely reason behind some of this ... a professional will have professional scissor and combs, they'll likely be leaving the clippers out at all times, etc. I was just underwhelmed when I found that these, which cost 3 times as much as my old ones, didn't have some of the same handy accessories. Overall though, I am VERY happy with my purchase. The little nit-picky things I've identified as negatives will likely be forgotten within a few months. As long as these last as long or longer than my previous set, I won't hesitate to recommend them to others!

Gold Magic Clipper
I have been a barber for 35years. Wahl has always been my default choice of tools. I possess and have used Wahl clippers and Detailers all my professional life and I can state categorically that this is the best Clipper I have used by far. Great ergonomically. Light in weight for the power. Very sharp. They do cost but I feel are good value for money. I cannot recommend these Clippers enough.

Brand new but wouldn't charge
I bought this brand new but it wouldn't charge. Wahl customer service wasn't brilliant - they said they would repair it if i sent it at my own expense to the US. Thankfully Amazon were great and helped me sort it but you don't expect brand new products to just not work. I googled the issue and there are forums and YouTube videos so i'm evidently not alone.
