A little pull of the cord and you're good to go! And, to keep from using it constantly, which can be unhealthy, I release the cords and let my back do the work for a while. This has helped my sciatica, pelvic misalignment, and si joint symptoms (ie, loads of back pain). This brand was loaned to me by chiroractor, had to get one for keeps. It feels durable, the strings feel like they'll last a while. But, I will say the older one I borrowed felt a bit used....still worked its wonders and my guess is that one had some miles on it.
