what is a lock stitch

When useing the sewing awl, the LOCK stitch is accomplished by taking the TRAILING piece of the thread and bringing it THROUGH THE SMALL LOOP that will present itself BEFORE pulling the awl back through the hole it punctured , to begin the next stitch...repeat every time and you will have a series of lock stitches hope this helps ya

Can you lock the thread so that is does not unwind while stitching?

There is a screw that goes through the spool, which you can tighten and increase the friction of the thread unwind. I tend to hold the stitcher so that my finger and or thumb is against the spool and control it that way.

I plan on making mittens out of an old mink coat. Do you think this will work in sewing double mink leather? Will it work to make mittens?
