The elastic band is taut (which is really good as this means my speaker won't "dance" while inside the casing) so a little tugging is needed when I slipped the speaker inside. I haven't done any drop test (while the speaker is inside... and I have no intention of doing it anytime) so I don't know how good it is, as far as shock absorption is concerned but it seems sturdy enough to withstand moderate impact (accidental bumps, ect.).
