Good quality
I got this for my havanese's toe nails. He freaks out from the clippers and the dremel so I thought I'd give a regular file a shot. He is very good with brushing and actually snoozes while I'm doing it so after he got nice and relaxed I started getting him used to having it touch his feet. It only took a few times and he lets me file every nail. It's going to take some time to get them as short as I want them but the grooved edge works great. A coarser grit would work faster but then it would be too rough when his nails get shorter so I'm fine with slow and steady. The flat side seems a lot smoother, I use it to get rid of any ragged edges. I'm happy with this and might buy one for myself lol

What is the glass files used for?????? Hahahaha
Even though the files are for the use by animals (dogs) and I am laughing as I write this, I gave one to my mother and one for myself and my mother said it is for the dogs because of course, she reads the instructions on how to get the dogs to relax before starting (etc.) but it is also worth noting that I am also using this glass file for myself and it works great for my feet!!! Hahahaha!! So get this glass file for your furry babies and/or get some nice sturdy glass files for yourself and your loved ones too!!! Donna Chavez has been a member for years now!! Thank you

Great for humans, but please don't buff cats
I bought this product to use on my cat, but it didn't work for him - the cat's claws have a layered consistency like mica. Using any kind of emery to round out the clipped edge made the nail fray off in layers, which resulted in a messy nail edge that took a while to grow out (I kept finding claw layers on the floors) and an unhappy cat. It was worth a try, but realistically, if you keep the cat in possession of a good-condition scratching post (sisal is great), the cat will buff his nails himself. So I decided to use this myself! I can tell you on human nails, this works great. I had it 2.5 years until I dropped it from the medicine cabinet and it broke in half. It is made of glass, after all. A note about buffing: I've seen people refer to a "back and forth motion" and this is wrong, at least on humans. You always move in one direction so that you don't fray the "grain" of the nail cell formation. (Pay attention if you get a professional manicure: they move quickly but only grind in one direction.) I think this may be the same on animals; a little observation will tell you which direction to go. So one less star if it's meant for cats, but in general it is a high quality item that I've had for a long time, with no evidence that it wears down or wasn't well-made, and works great for me.

I wrote for large dog on description and it is not defective for my dog.
I needed a file for a large dog that’s what I wrote in the search bar. It barely did work for him but it was a nice file for a human or small animals. But that’s not what I was looking for.

Dog nail file, works beautifully.
I like that it was easy to handle & manoeuvre, Quick and efficient! A few swipes and the nail was smoothed with no ragged edges. Care should be taken, if dropped I suspect it would crack? Best file I ever used.

Perfect
I have an 80 lb lab who absolutely hates to have her nails trimmed. Pre covid, I would take her to the groomer and get her toenails dremmeled, but not now. I didn't know this, but dremmeling instead of clipping causes the quick to grow longer which makes it harder to clip . Not that my girl would ever let me near her with a clipper. But this glass file seems to work just fine for filing down the tips of her nails. I think doing a little of the nail every so often would get her back to a good size nail. And she actually seems to enjoy getting her nails filed! It's easy to use and easy to clean. Just have to be careful and gentle with it, because after all, it is glass. I'm glad I found this

I was considering a dremel...
I've been using my own glass files to smooth edges after clipping my dog's nails. They tend to split & I was considering a dremel to speed up the process. I found this when purchasing more 'human' nail files & I just knew. This thing tears through my beagle's nails for a smooth easy finish. It's not as fast as clipping alone, or a dremel may be. The shape makes it faster than my previous routine & especially when used regularly. It's thick with a nice weight, operates smoothly, uses elbow grease(my preferred source of power) & takes up no space! My teenager also likes the beveled edge to round the edge of her own nails. There, multiple uses too! Lastly, my dog is wary of clipping but not scared, he does get impatient. When I use the file, it borders on attention, so I feel like he tolerates it;) Btw, Bonafide has great tools & after 5yrs in a 4 girl household, they still seem like new.

As the file's description clearly states - this is for small dogs, and for ours (English Toy Terrier) it's a perfect size and grain. I have a number of files with various coarseness for shaping my own nails for guitar playing - this file is much coarser than any I have without "catching" like a stainless steel one I've tried. As for it's construction, I can confirm this has genuinely etched surfaces, and not glued-on glass powder as found on cheaper files. If the file feels less effective after using for a while - rinse with warm water and a dab of detergent. After a final rinse and dry it's as good as new again. Having used this on our dog that gets nervous when it's nail-trimming-time, I'm very pleased with it. It takes down the nail at a reasonably quick rate whilst not splitting shards off. Our pooch stays quite relaxed and even starts to fall asleep ... bonus. There's been mention of the information leaflet stating this is for humans? Not the one I ordered and received. It clearly states it's been made with dogs, cats & birds in mind - I'd personally agree. Having a flat side and a curved, shaping side is great. You get a good professional looking finnish in no time. I'd personally recommend this for small dogs, especially if like ours, they're nervous about a nail trimming.

I am very happy with this file so far. My dog is a small miniature poodle, and this file is just the right size, or perhaps a tiny bit too big, for filing her nails. She tolerated it MUCH better than traditional metal file. It also worked a lot better for me than a metal file as it required less pressure to "bite" into the nail and left a nice smooth finish for relatively little effort. I also like how one side is flat and the other side has a carved curvature to the file, so shaping her nails is even easier. If you're used to a metal file or are thinking it'll work like your own glass finger nail file, expect there is a bit of a learning curve to using the product, but it's worth learning the slightly different technique!! Her nails don't leave little lines on my skin now when we play, yay!
