Everyman's Talmud: The Major Teachings of the Rabbinic Sages [Cohen, Abraham] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Everyman's Talmud: The Major Teachings of the Rabbinic Sages Review: A great introduction to Judaic culture - Iโm about halfway into reading the book and Iโm absolutely in love with it. It is a very well drawn out introduction to mainly to the Talmud, and additionally with some references to the Mishnah and Midrash. In my opinion I do not recommend this for the average ordinary reader or researcher. This is only for those who are looking to enhance their interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures, overall literary comprehension skills, and ability to look beyond the basic concepts of the Torah and Prophets and look into their deeper esoteric meanings. Review: Old relic - Relic way of thinking was a nice read but I converted to Zyadut so I donโt need this

A really great version of the Talmud for the here and now
I've been finding that this is helpful in studying the Torah. It gives lots of things to think about as it is a oral tradition. It's more or less having Rabbi's right along side of you with discussing the traditions and giving you a good amount of knowledge of most every question you might have about living your life according to Torah. With Torah 'meaning instructions ' one is always going to have questions as to what something means. With the Talmud being a discussion helping to understand the questions you have. This particular Talmud I find alot to look forward to because it is easy to find what your looking for and then upon reading I find it gives me much understanding of what I need and am looking for. For such a small book its absolutely packed with information that you would be looking for that applies to the life here and now. I wish I had got this a long time ago. The only thing I wish is that it was the whole set of the Talmud because it would be so interesting, complete and I would love to read through them. But if your looking for a version of it that could be used everyday in the gere and now I would highly recommend this. You will not be disappointed.

Essential Parts of the Talmud for the Character of God and Man's Relationship to God
What I can I say? It's the Talmud separated into chapters with a reasonably good index. It's hard to rate this book: 1. If this review is for the Talmud itself, the Talmud is a legendary and epic revelation of theology. I'm a Christian and have learned an enormous amount from these writings. For those unfamiliar, the Talmud contains commentary on scripture (with references), traditional stories, and famous quotes of rabbinic scholars. It was compiled around 200 AD, with a rich historical background. 2. If this review is for this particular edit of the Talmud, it's a great copy. The whole Talmud is about 6,200 pages long, so obviously this book does not contain the whole thing. This book reduces the Talmud to the essential writings for the character of God and man's relationship to God. For those unfamiliar with the Talmud, this copy is an excellent starting point.

I have loved it so far
I am not yet very deep into the book, but I have loved it so far. Cohen's selection of words and idioms is impeccable. The introduction is very vivid and helpful, even if you have no previous knowledge on the topic. Some basic Tanakh cognizance helps a lot, but if you're looking for books like this one then I'm sure you won't have an issue. If I could complain about something, it'd be the dates provided for births, deaths, and other events (especially in the Introduction); not because they're wrong (how can I know), but because they seem to differ (greatly) from every other source I check. Dates aside, the content is invaluable. This is not meant for serious Talmud study, as other have said, but I don't think that was the author's purpose when publishing. It is a thorough overview of the major teachings conveniently divided by topics, which is great to get acquainted with what the Talmud says and with the ideology of most of the Jewish population. If you're just beginning to study Talmud, I reccommend getting this book, reading it, and then moving on to a more focused one. Great purchase, no regrets.

An extraordinary piece of scholarship, summarising into a systematic form, the basic theological/spiritual/cultural paradigms which both fed and are inherent in the Talmud. This work is helpful in redirecting the reader to the extraordinarily monolithic nature of Judaism across both time and geography, in contradistinction to much scholarship which seeks to โ and often helpfully โ shed light on the differences between various Jewish sects and periods. Abraham Cohen helps one to remember that Judaism is and has been both consistent in respect to key ideas about God and Israel, whilst producing breadth in the detail. Cohen reminds us that if you want the same hundred answers to one question, then ask a hundred rabbis how many gods there are.

Mooi overzicht van de hoofdlijnen van de talmoedische leer. Vaak hoor je over de Talmoed allen anekdotes, hier gaat het om de inhoud. Nuttig, overzichtelijk.
